Hi all pals, I am new here. I had been in HK for almost 3 months and now i intend to find a job and settle down here. I am having difficulties in getting a job here because I dont have any HKID and I cant speak Cantonese well. Does anyone know how can I solve the problem. I know that in order to stay here i need employer to apply the work permit. But where can I get a job? I did post a lot of CV to the firms and there are reply from them but once they heard that I dont have any working permit they reject me immediately. I know that most of you here are working or manage to get a job. Could someone advise me. Thanks.

As a holder of a visitor's visa you are not permitted to look for a job in the first place. If you find a job and the employer is willing to sponsor your visa application you still need to explain to the immigration department why you didn't stick to the rules.

Thanks for replying me. I am a Singaporean and I have no problem in speaking English and Chinese. The problem I have is speaking in Cantonese. Any recommendation of schools that teach Cantonese? If i am not allowed to look for a job using a visiting pass, then how can I find a job in Hong Kong if I really wanted to work here.

Well, first of all, you need to figure out what type of job you want. If its general admin etc... it will be tough. Specialists will not have a problem finding a job.

Of course you can look for work! What kind of work are you looking for? Where are you looking? There are lots of job websites. Sometimes, you just have to be persistent and keep smiling. It took me 7 months to find a proper job - just keep going and dont let it get you down!

It's perfectly legal to look for for work while on a visitor's visa. My advice....eventually a company will see your worth, and go through the process of getting you a visa. It's not as much hassle as some employers make it out to be. Just stick at it! Once you've got a visa, it can easily be transferred to other jobs/companies. My flatmate has landed a job in property, but is currently waiting to recieve his visa from his current job (language centre), once he recieves that, he'll quit and transfer the visa to his new job. Both the language centre and property company have no qualms about this.
