| WCC and Windosr House should be significantly cheaper than places like Fortress. You might be able to save a few hundred HKD Kowloon-side but probably not much more. I bought a 2nd hand IBM X31 from WCC 2 months ago and it has proved reliable and a bargain at approx. half the original price - something to consider if you're willing to take a risk. If you buy new and they won't knock the price any lower for you, try negotiating for extra RAM to be included - often the most effective upgrade from a performance perspective (I'd recommend at least 512MB if you're running Windows XP and more than a couple of applications concurrently). Edit: just spotted KIA's comments about drivers - very good point. My X31 had a Chinese version of windows on it and even though I had a Win XP installation CD with me, I spent ages getting the right IBM drivers off the IBM website. All sorted fine in the end but it wasn't trivial. Not likely to be an issue if you buy new and ensure it is pre-installed with a Win XP English edition, unless you plan to tinker a lot... | Thanks. I am looking at the IBM Thinkpad R52 - is that much worse than the T-series, or is it just that the T-series is lighter, weightwise? Any particular stores in WCC or Windsor House that people recommend??? Thanks. |

Same comments to make as PhilE in that I bought a used X31 whose original configuration was Chinese XP. It was not that difficult to get the set of drivers and I got a lot of help from ThinkPad Forums .

I am already running a Powerbook at home, but alas a lot of business programs I need to run are more condusive to a PC/Windows environment.

For what it's worth, I wanted the exact requirements as JT does and i got a Toshiba Portege M200 Tablet. Its fantastic! Its got 1400x1050 on a 12" screen! Great battery life and plus!... You can write on the screen and carry it around and write on MSN in handwritting. Neat! It has a dedicated video card (32mb) and heaps of RAM. The only issue i have with this little baby is that it comes standard with no CD/DVD player. But i just picked up a really slim one that is powered off two USB 2.0 so no need to have external power supply for about HK$750. If you're going to consider one, i'd probably go for the Fujitsu or Toshiba one (for reliability). Anyway, there's my 2c... Sorry, just had to use the new logo, hey where's the vomit one???

Thinkpad if you are not concern with the weight, get the new Z60m. Especially for graphical usage. The screen is 15" and price wise I think shld be comparable. Bloomberg don't really need additional graphics resources. I am going to HK soon and I bought a Fujitsu S7020 instead. Wanted to get T43 thinkpad but can't wait for the shipment to come. Note, Thinkpad no longer belongs to IBM. Bought over by lenova (chinese company), so they are dis-associating the brand thinkpad with IBM these days. But quality still as good and sturdy!

Don't buy laptops with mirror like reflective screens(some call it Brightview)....very annoying. Thinkpads are built like tanks.
