Hello

I have some visitors staying with me for a fortnight next month and was interested in any ideas of unusual things to do / places to see.

I am sure we can keep them occupied for a week with the usual: Star Ferry, Peak, Outlying Islands, Kowloon markets, Ruby in ChungKing (a must for any visitor), shopping, Lan Kwai Fong etc.

I was interested if anyone could suggest places to go, restaurants, bars, museums, walks, trips - ie anything out of the ordinary that would be good to take them to.

The thread on bars was interesting, a drink at either Felix or Aqua (or both!) should be on the list. I have also heard there are helicopter trips from the roof of the Peninsular that sound interesting.

its the PENINSULA. of course macau is a day in itself, then hillside romping in the new terr's, aberdeen/jumbo (a rip off but iconic), gold coast, po lin monastery, prince edward at night, sai kung seafood (pretty gross but, well, iconic), HK police museum, maritime museum in stanley (real cool that one) and many other things i cant think of right now..

yo you should take them to the horse races. that's where imma be at in december, have them watch "the young and dangerous" part 5 movie, then take them to throw the orange on the tree. After that take em to macau and hit the casinos to win some big money.

I found out the other week that there is a free Chinese junk (yes, the one you see in the postcards) trip organised by the HK Tourists Association. I think it is done once a week, for visitors only. You can ask about it in the HKTA's shop in star ferries.

Yes, it is called "Duk Lin", every Saturday at 2pm (depending on the weather too) You just need to register with your passport. When my sisters came to visit last Summer, they went on the trip. I didn't get on the boat but only stood by Star Avenue to watch. I think I enjoyed it more than them because the wave was so choppy it made them felt sick!

There is also a free "Architecture Walk" too (Saturday morning) where you will be taken to buildings like HSBC, IFC, St Paul Cathedral, etc.

And also TaiChi class, Chinese pastries making class, etc.

Thanks for all the suggestions. What is 'the young and dangerous'? Better than the Young and the Restless that used to air on TV here years ago? What do you mean by through orange?

The architectural tour sounds really interesting too. Is it arranged by the HKTA? I can pop into their office at Star Ferry.

Young and Dangerous is a classisc hk series of films based on Triads

The Orange tree is a special wishing tree in the new territories where you tie your wish to an orange and throw it onto the branch of this tree and if it catches on the branch then your wish is meant to come true.

The wishing tree is in Tai Po but the government has banned people from throwing the orange on the tree anymore ever since one of the branches fell off early this year. You can still buy the orange and hang it on a specific fence provided.

There are some cool tours and day trip ideas eg. kayaking in Sai Kung, walks in remote places. What about Mai Po marshes? It is a nature reserve. http://www.wwf.org.hk/eng/maipo/ I'm not sure whether there any migrating birds there at the moment, but worth checking.

2 weeks in Hong Kong is a long time. I had some visitors come out for that long and we ended up having a long weekend in Beijing. Other options would be Singapore or Bangkok. If your visitors have ventured from afar, Im sure that there would be up for visiting another place.
