Urgent - Home Office Tech Help Needed

Hi,
I need to set up a home office as I will be working from home. Need advice on how to go about this, technology wise. Would greatly appreciate advice on:

1) Internet connection - currently have Now Broadband in another room, and dont want to split the speed (two 3mps logins) to have two log ins from two rooms. Wireless would be too slow. Any recs for the provider and which plan to apply for? Is my best choice NOW 6 mps, or is there a faster service I can sign up for?

2) Who can I contact to check the wiring/connection in the room so that I know if I need to re-wire? The Now Broadband person mentioned in quick passing that the wiring in that room was not up to par, but didnt go further since at that time the room wasnt being wired for service. Alas I now need to set up the office in there.

3) Recs for where to purchase the laptop/docking station, monitors and printers would also be greatly greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

Why do you say wireless is too slow?

Do you have alot of downloading/uploading to do?

Yes, I will be doing a lot of emailing, as well as using real time systems such as Bloomberg.

I don't understand the "wireless is too slow" comment. 802.11g wireless routers run at 54kbit/s which won't be a limiting factor on any residential service that PCCW/Netvigator will sell you.

I should also point out that NOW is the name of the TV service that runs over Netvigator. If you want high speed internet access then you can't be watching NOW TV as well on the same connection.

>> . If you want high speed internet access then you can't be watching NOW TV as well on the same connection.

We can still do 1-2mbps downloads when the broadband TV is on. You do need a 6Mbps line for the extra bandwidth.

Having said that, most webservers and connections are fairly throttled these days with various QoS / bandwidth management devices along the line, so speed is not always an issue.

Bloomberg should be fairly optimised and I'd suspect you wont have a problem running it if you get the 6mbps connection and have the TV on.

OR - wait till the next gen devices from Now (HDTV boxes) hit .. and hopefully get a 24mbps connection and a pre-N router... but by then I'm sure 64mbps would be on the horizon...

Er, yes, but 1-2Mbps is hardly "high speed" these days

So NowTV/Netvigator is the connection to go with? Any other providers?

Also:
1) Any suggestions on having someone take a look at the strength of the wiring in the soon--to-be-office?? Would the NOW TV people be the ones to examine/replace the wiring, or do I have to find someone else? Or would it be PCCW/Telephone who needs to check the telephone/possible internet wiring??

2) Should I go to Fortress to get the laptop, monitors or such? I need someone to come to my place to set everything up, and apparently Fortress only sets up the laptop in-store, but wont setup the monitor connections and such.

Thanks again.

It can't be that difficult... there's only 1 plug a monitor can connect to on a laptop. Perhaps the sales person at fortress can teach you?
