I'm looking for an interior designer who can help me rearrange furniture, find some new pieces and choose paint colors etc. I'm not looking to spend major moolah, I just need help pulling it all together and giving it a finished look. Any recommendations?

thanks for the links! despite having lived overseas for over 10 years (6 in HK), I still see our home here as 'temporary', as stupid as that sounds, and have treated it as such. i don't take the care in decorating here as i do for our 'vacation home' in Canada that we use a couple of times a year! i really would like that professional, 'put together' look. our place looks nice, just feels a bit tired. i hate the idea of spending loads of cash on a designer for a rental (oops there i go again ), and, unfortuately, none of my friends have any taste.
kidding, of course. the cost of a designer has always put me off. i'd like to think it is worth it since we spend a lot of time at home and believe your surroundings can affect your outlook and happiness.... just have to deal with that nagging cheapskate that lives in the back of my mind

why didn't i think of that? from what i understand, i just need to go out for a few hours, skip from shop to shop, buy a few outfits, get my hair done and return to a newly decorated home. sounds easy enough.

Indeed it is, alternatively Architechtural Digest is great for inspiration, and then things like Elle decorationand house and garden are very good on the practical side. Go through the mags - cut out anything you like, stick it all on a board. You will soon see themes developing and then it makes it much easier to decide on a look.

I actually love home design mags... just not the uber chic ones! I really like House Beautiful, Ideal Home, Homes and Gardens etc. I find them more helpful with really useable tips and information. I've cut out pics and know what I want.... its the execution that i'm having trouble with. Getting the right scale, mix of fabrics etc. I agree with you though, the mags are a great place to start. I read on another thread that you're looking to get into interior design. Its one of those things that I'd like to try as well (despite the fact that I posted asking for help!) I'd love to learn the tricks of the trade.
