I thought working for the Big 4 or any other MNC would pay big bucks!

U can get by on 14k but if u dont have family or housing here its gonna be realllll tough! I would only leave Oz if u were out of work and no savings left as back door out.

It's kind of a vicious circle- a lot of the big co's think they can pay less because people want to work for them because people will be proud to work for them and to get their name on their CV.

I'd rather work for a smaller company and be a name rather than a number and be able to ask a boss for campassionate rather than have to submit an application in triplicate to an HR department in another country!

in honesty, if u have a few years behind u in ur field, $14k without any perks is not work leaving Oz for. I'm assuming ur talking $HK, not $AUD.

even if this includes accomodation, it would be just enough to have some fun, but it depends on your reasoning for wanting on overseas job. as an expat you will spend more than locals on food, as to get any western food is on the expensive side (and every now and then, u will want "comfort food")

i guess, my opinion is that without rent in your package, you would only have a maximum of $6k to live on per month, ie $250AUD per week. thats not much, really, is it?

I work for one of the big 4 and get 25 K per month before tax - I am unqualified and work in business development - I took a pay cut to move to Hong Kong and wasn't happy about it but thats the most I could push them to. I also get paid over time (which I have never had before) and that is certainly worth while in HK

Oh - I wouldn't really be able to do as much as I would like on that money if I hadn;t followed boyfriend out here who gets paid more and has the flat paid for and flights etc.

I would say its an unacceptable offer - from London nothing is cheaper here.

Having moved from London two months ago I can totally disagree with the comment that nothing is cheaper here, Food for a start is much cheaper, transportation as well, utilities are also cheaper too etc etc.

And yep I worked for a big four too when I was in London, Wouldn't go back to them unless it was for seriously big money.

agreed. it is very possible to live on 1/3 or less of what we used to spend in Oz, so long as u dont eat out all the time, dont buy western food brands etc. it is very do-able.

travel, food etc is much cheaper once u sus out wot u need/want. locals food is real cheap. even some western food is comparable or cheaper (eg maccas). but "good" western food is generally more expensive (nothing wrong with maccas, BTW!!).

in saying that, i think the original poster will still struggle on $14k a month. lots of people sped that (and much more) on rent alone...
