So how cold is winter?

Okay, I've been shopping and seen all the thick coats, scarves and boots - even thermal underwear today.

What sort of temperatures are we looking at here? I am starting to get worried. I was hoping for a mild winter with a few weeks of jackets. Can anyone draw similarities to other places in Oz or UK to give me the flavour?

Single digit temperatures (in Celsius) are quite rare, we might not get any days below 10 degrees or we might get a couple. The coldest it's likely to get is around 13-14 degrees....

Not cold enough for a hottie

Here is a table showing monthly normals of meteorological elements with extreme values.

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
You'll get a few days when you'll want the scarf and jacket, but not enough to have to go buy a whole new wardrobe. Had a few chilly ones last jan.

I once experienced near zero degrees Centigrade when I first lived in Disco Bay
Generally, you can still get by with a shirt and long trousers in the evenings during the height of winter.

The replies have been on the money. I never needed more than a decent sweater and scarf when I was out and about these past two winters (I moved here in Feb 2004).

That being said, it can get pretty nippy at home, esp at night. Also, while you're sedentary (watching tv, working, whatnot), you'll feel colder than you would if you were actively moving around. I usually lounge around in boxers (+ track pants) and a tee shirt and my arms and lower legs/feet were often uncomfortably cold these past two winters seeing as how central heat seems to be unknown in HK (at least the apartment I live in and those I've seen).

Instead of wearing a sweater and stiff jeans around my apartment, I opted for some peairs of merino wool thermal undies (to me, thermal undies + tee shirt and track pants is more comfortable and more natural but your mileage may vary). Picking up an inexpensive radiant heater also can be helpful.
