What is the easiest way to get to the Big Buddha on Lantau? Suggestions on which ferry (is there only one to Lantau) and how to get from the ferry to the monastery would be much appreciated.

I thought easiest was MTR to Tung Chung, then catch a bus/taxi there.

Three options depending on where you're coming from a or b may be optimal:

a.) Ferry to Mui Wo from ferry pier north of IFC, then bus to Ngong Ping

b.) MTR to Tung Chung, then bus to Ngong Ping/Tai O.

c.) Boat from Tuen Mun via Tung Chung to Tai O (only a few times a day but very scenic), then bus to Ngong Ping (only every hour)

As it is your first time you might consider joining a tour.

Best bet to get on a tour with like minded people would be to chat to a conceirge of a nearby hotel.

Had sent some visitors one such a tour in May and they even had a 'local' Australian guide who was very knowledgeable.

we went not so long ago. Just get the ferry over there, then there is a bus terminus outside the ferryport - even has a mcdonalds next to it so your sorted for a toilet!

Getting the bus is cheap and easy, then just wander about the place. You really dont need a guide, its not that big a place!

You may be asked to buy an entry ticket at the bottom of the steps to the Buddha. This entry ticket includes vegetarian lunch at the Ngong Ping monastery. Even though this is not made very clear at the entrance, buying the ticket is not required to climb to the top of the steps and walk around the Buddha. It is only necessary to have a ticket for entering the museum inside. If you're not interested in the lunch, I advise against buying the ticket as there is not that much to see inside the Buddha to justify the expense.
