i'm wondering this myself : how can i get the file from my pc onto a dvd so i can watch on tv?? i know it involves some complicated steps in converting the files to xxx and then burning onto the dvd (which btw suppose to take forever for 1 episode). i have the current season of LOST but am reluctant to sit in front of my pc to watch it

any help??

There's a lot of choice out there but I use TMPGENC's software.

Or buy a DVD player that plays DivX files. The cheapest one I found in Fortress was an LG one at $590. Then you could stick all the Lost .avi files on one DVD and watch it on your TV. Couldn't be easier!

last nite we dl a .avi file and was able to directly burn onto dvd - HOWERVER - our dvd player couldn't play it (it's 'bout 3yrs old so probably doesn't have the technology to support it). ended up watching it on the PC. we have ordered a Hyundai dvd recorder, so, hopefully, it'll work on that.

we just have to find some sites where the files are .avi but will need time to search. majority of the files that we dl are .rmvb (or s'thg like that).

Most DVD players will not be able to read .avi files. Also .avi files are huge. You need to compress them to a VCD, SVCD, DVD or Divx format before burning to DVD.

Don't count on that so much.. You have to check the specs before deciding buying a new device. If the device is capable of playing DivX/Xvid AVI files it should say so explicitly in the specification.

Easiest way is to look on the front panel of the actual unit - if you're in the shop - as there will be a DivX and/or Xvid logo on there, next to the usual mp3, dolby, etc logos.

However, it could be worth investing a bit of money in the unit, and to make sure it is firmware upgradeable. I had a Pioneer DV-380S before I moved to HK - it would play just about anything (only files I couldn't make work were Matroska packs), and only cost me about £70 in the UK.
