Thanks - how long does it usually take for downloading? I tried once and it took almost 24 hours.

I think that the actions of the various industry bodies are despicable, frequently unlawful - or at least making a mockery of the law - and are almost all based on the simple fact that they have attack lawyers on tap, and most people will be too scared to contest the frequently-laughable claims made in their attacks on customers. See
http://recordingindustryvspeople.blogspot.com/.

I think the recent Sony fiasco has clearly shown the scum up as the ignorant, illiterate, hypocritical fools that they are, who deserve exactly what's coming to them. This, of course, was a highly-illegal and very nasty attack against people who had bought a legitimate CD - it was not an attack against people copying anything - it was an attack against those customers who chose to take the high road.

I believe very strongly in compensating actors, musicians, writers and other creative types for the work they do. I also believe very strongly that the current structure of the 'creative industries' is badly broken in the face of modern technology, and I'd love to see more cases - there are already plenty out there - where the artists can be more directly paid without the money filtering through the massive structures designed to take as much money as possible before it gets to the people who actually create the content.

I believe that things like Pop/American Idol make a mockery of any claims to be supporting art - they are about getting young people to sign away as many of their rights as is humanly possible (and often more than that) in exchange for their 15 minutes of fame - before the parasites move onto next year's victims.

I spend plenty of money on so-called 'intellectual property' - and have done for years, from shops all over the world, online - but I now find that I can do it largely on my terms, simply because the alternate distribution channels are so efficient that I can, for example, download a game, CD, book, movie or TV show, try it out, then buy it if I feel like doing so. This may make me a copyright infringer - but it doesn't make me a thief (since I am not taking anyone's property away from them) or a pirate (since I'm not holding up ships on the high seas and robbing them). As I heard it put on a podcast this morning (paraphrasing): If they wanted to really go after the people involved in mass piracy (infringement), they'd have to go after the triad-controlled stuff coming out of Malaysia - but going after mums, grannies and little kids in the corporate-friendly American courts is much easier and less likely to end up with bits of lawyers being cut up by cleavers.

You may guess that this is something which annoys me a little...

Hey guys, I have netvigator 6M but my downlaods go really slow (somtimes the uplaod is really superceding the download rate). By Slow i mean I get about 11kb/s although I have hit 110kb/s (very rare), and the average I would say is 24kb/s. I'm pretty sure I can get it higher and should cosndiering the speed of the interne ti purchased. Does anyone who's an expert with Bt help me out (er, ports?), or tell me if it's an ISP problem?

Thanks mucho.

How to speed up BitTorrent downloads

If you are usign a network router, then read on. If not, skip to 2).

1) Some ports on your router may be blocked by default and the solution is to open them up. Here is a tutorial of how to do this. You don't need to be an IT monkey to figure it out, only a basic knowledge of computers is required.
http://p2p.weblogsinc.com/entry/0401842428674831/

2)Sometimes, limiting your upload rate will increase your download rate, especially if you use cable or ADSL, where out bandwidth is much smaller than in bandwidth. If you are seeing very high upload rates and low download rates, this is probably the case.

Wow, I thought I would give this BT thing a try since y'all are always talking about it, but it was a no go. DL rates were around 5K, UL was limited to 5K, and estimate DL time was about 3 days! Uh, no thanks. Or is Azureus on Netvigator just a bad combination?
Anyway, no BTing for me.

jaetee,

Those speeds could be symptomatic of a number of things. E.g.

- Poorly seeded file - i.e. not enough people sharing it
- The 'port forwarding' or restricted upload speed issues Kirlex explains above

I have the 6M Now Broadband setup and get anything from snails pace on old files to 300kb/s+ on well seeded files (e.g. try Top Gear episodes from UKNova). That means I can download a good quality episode of Top Gear in less than 30 minutes.

Don't give up so easily!
