6 speed vs. Automatic? help me out

I'm contemplating on getting a car, but I'm between getting a 6 seep and an F1 automatic or tiptronic (automatic).

Basically, I'd like to know what the drivers here think, 6 speed or Automatic. My schedule is fairly easy, I don't go out in the peak hours, I don't go to central unless I have to (taxi), and I'm in HK island Qbay if that helps.

Any and all suggestions are welcome as I'm trying to really make a decision before I look at cars. From being here so far, my gut tells me auto but I fathom there are 6sp drivers here that can give me feedback.

P.S. I'm not driving yet

well, I drove in the USA for 10 years with not 1 accident (I had to brag ), but all automatic. Driving skills on the other side of the road, VERY good, but in HK, with smaller streets, I haven't tried.

I would say my driving would be limited to maybe the weekends OR non-peek hours during the week.

thanks in advance for the response

I think the first question is what car are you going to buy?

If it's a sports car, definitely go manual.

Martyn is right. If you are getting a sports car I would go manual. They are more fun that way. Also, manuals usually get better gas milage expecially with the hills there are here in HK.

I'm between:
Automatic: Maserati F1 , Porsche Boxter Tip
Manual: Tuscan TVR (my favorite care)
-have to import the tuscan from England, so that's some work

So, yes, sports car. I just have some sports car choices and wanted to make sure a 6sp. was feasible here, as I'm not an experienced HK driver.

it would be a shame to drive an automatic sports car. Would you be learning stick over here in HK?

Well for the Maserati, it's not an automatic, it's F1 paddle shift, which is either F1 automatic, or paddle shift 6 speed on your wheel , like race cars.

Tuscan TVR, I'm sure you've seen swordfish

Well, manual is cool on hill slopes and doing weirdo cornering on highways. If you are stuck in traffic jams, your body will swear like mad!

I agree with shirley on traffic too. In Houston I would just keep it close to idle in 2nd gear when I encountered traffic but if I were to do that here then a whole motorcade of taxis would just cut right in front of me.
It is literally bumper-to-bumper, stop and go traffic here and it drives me crazy (no pun intended).

You are buying a sports car for goodness sakes and a manual transmission is just one more aspect that gives you increased control of your driving. If you aren't up for the risks then you should settle for the sequential manual gearbox.

I can't hardly wait to get back to my car back in the states. I hate ABS, I hate traction control, and I hate torsen LSDs. Either I've been playing too much GT4 or I've been away from my car too long. Sorry for the rant.
