cerberus,

Could you provide any evidence to support your assertion that the MTR/bus co/s make "ludicrous profits" from the transport business?

As far as I know, the MTR doesn't make any significant amount of money from running a subway system - it makes all its profit from the rights to the property that sits in and above its stations.

I'm not too sure about the bus companies, but my understanding is that the terms of their franchises are such that the profit they can make is capped and if they exceed that then they are obliged to make fare cuts.

A lot of people from UK or live in the UK while they moving to HK, who would ship their cars to HK. Cars are a lot lower price in UK than in HK and I don't think you will have to pay much on tax as a self use and used car (may even be tax free, not sure). As far as I can see from other people, you are looking at saving HK$100K to HK$500 depending on your car. definitely worth it (has to be second hand car but not too old car though.

UK, Japan, and Australia/NZ already accepts registration of LHD vehicles.
but HK still only accepts RHD only!! (and we already travel between China and HK....)

I don't see the point of this...

Self use or not, there is still an import tax.

And a lot of hassle involved with shiping agents, paperwork, Insurance, risk of getting damaged on the boat etc etc.

So are they going to ship the car back to u.k etc when they finish there stint in hk? More money than sense I tell you.

Buy a cheap runaround for about $25k and make do with that, as all you'll probably use it for is to go shopping on a weekend and the occasional trip out somewhere.

It is a first registration tax. You can import it tax free but then all you can do is put it in your garage and admire it!

If you are importing a car you already own there is a 25% discount applicable for every year of ownership. That is a 25% reduction on each year's fee, and not 25% of the entire bill (ie no tax applicable after 4 years). Also, it only applies to the fee incurred on the value of the car, not the fee incurred due to costs of shipping, handling fees etc.

By way of example, I bought a car in the UK in 1994 for £500 (around $7,000). I was looking to import it next year - the fee would be around $400. So it can be cheap, if the car was purchased cheaply and you have owned it for a few years.

I wanted to bring a Tuscan TVR into HK, my cost would be almost 100% (90%+/-) of the price paid + fees. I could buy a new Ferrari for that prices, so I dropped the idea.

P.S. I LOVE Tuscan TVRs 6speed, god bless british sports cars

ohchk2001 is on a distinguished road
I hear after seven years you have to "re-certify" your car. What is that and how much does it cost?

It seems to make the use car prices go down prematurely.
