Mandarin - learning experience?

Hi,

I'm new to HK, but a long-time visitor to GeoExpat; I have been visiting the site since I was in the states .

Basically, after researching on this forum, I haven't found the specifics I'm looking for in learning mandarin. I'm residing on hong kong island (Quarry Bay), and would like to get professional mandarin lessons as close to my house as possible - for obvious reasons (not really versed on travel yet). Any and all recommendations are welcome, 'know it all' thank you in advance.

Welcome to HK!
What do you mean by "professional mandarin lesson"?
Courses offered by schools?
YMCA has some courses:
http://www.ymcahk.org.hk/

If you want a tutor to go to your place, they will charge alot more.
Baptist Univeristy, Chinese Univeristy, HK University, Open University etc etc all have Continue Education courses and they all offer Mandarin courses. You will be able to earn a certificate as well.

I speak fluent Mandarin but I am not a professional teacher. Do you speak any Mandarin? Read and write?

thanks for response...

By "professional mandarin lesson," I mean someone that has experience teaching mandarin, not just any person that says they do. I've read horror stories right here on Geoexpat where people describe their tutors as having no more than a 2nd grade mandarin speaking level.

I would prefer school + tutoring, as I'm more worried about time than money.

I'll check out the links you provided, thanks for the help.

P.S. I don't read / write / or do anything related to mandarin, besides my great chopstick use! that is why I want to learn.

just did a little research on YMCA, doesn't seem like they are far from me - but it sounds like their programs are limited; especially scheduling

Grungerock - checking your link now, thanks

tvrlover, I have heard many good reviews about Hong Kong Language Center too. Haven't had the chance to check it out yet, but it was highly recommended by my friends. Just to get a perspective, I would suggest you take a trial lesson in some other place and one in HKLC. I am sure you will see the difference!

I am currently trying to find a good tutor as well and have a free trail lesson with the Pacific Language school tomorrow, they have been very helpful so far and the website is www.pacificlanguage.com.
I'll post how I got on tomorrow!!

I was also looking at HKLC so will probably see if they can provide a trial lesson as well before deciding.

Good Luck

Emma
