I have done the impossible and deleted my Gmail account I had a number of tabs open one of which was my Gmail account. I thought I would do some tidying up and in another tab went through the steps to delete another Gmail account that I have but rarely use. Having done that and feeling good about it I returned to my opened tab in my primary Gmail account and expecting to have to login again found that I couldn't. I tried a number of times to login even though it was obvious I had deleted the account. The open tab must have a cookie open and the newer tab requesting the delete must have used the information in that cookie and deleted my primary account. You can not imagine how I feel right now. I immediately sent an email to Google to ask for help and am waiting. Have any of you made a similar mistake and if so how did you get on with undoing the damage?

Strange...So what happened to your secondary Gmail account.. Both deleted!!!...What would you call it!! A bug in Gmail or browser not handling cookies properly!!.

It didn't get deleted and it's that account that I am forced to use now. I would tend to believe that it's Firefox not handling cookies properly. Do you want to try this with IE?

Yap.. i also thought of browser prolem in the first place.. Though i guess IE should not have this problem simply based on assumption that it doesnt support Tabbed browsing and generally IE cookie management is good..

Well IE doesn't currently support tabbed browsing but it does support multiple windows. I think the problem may be common.

I dont think it is Firefox or IE bug. It is normal behavior of any browser. You can not have two sessions active (i.e. logged into same website) with two different accounts at the same time with same browser. You can try it by logging in in Gmail with one account, and then opening a new window/tab and logging in with another account. Then go back to first window/tab and it should be replaced with last logged in account. For best browser, I use AOL Explorer. It is new browser based on IE with built-in tabbed browsing and other cool features. Plus it got nice/sexy interface. You can download it from http://downloads.channel.aol.com/browser IE also support tabbed browsing via MSN toolbar. Besided tabbed browsing you get other cool features like desktop search too. http://toolbar.msn.com

Right you can not have more than one email account logged in using the SAME browser. That's exactly where the browser failed me. I logged into my primary account then my secondary account. The browser should have detached my primary account. I then chose to delete my secondary account but Gmail obtained details of my primary account (from the browser cookie information) and deleted that one.

Thanks but no Sonnyp. I have the account that I meant to delete in the first place! I've emailed Google and am waiting anxiously.

This would happen because I suspect the cookies that are kept in memory (session cookies) are not in a shared memory area.
