Try to hire a private tutor to give phonetic symbol (pinyin) lessons first. Ten hours is more than enough. Then you can self-study or join any classes for begginers .CUHK, SPACE .YWCA AND YMCA ,they all have Mandarin classes as English as the medium.sensible to learn Mandarin nowadays.more useful and easier to learn than Cantonese.

I can highly recommend the British Council - learnt Contonese there for about a year. The have day and evening classes, the costs were about $2400 for 3 months.

my teacher

I have a private Mandarin teacher teaching me for a few months and I think she's quite good (personally I didn't make any comparison with other teachers since she's my first teacher in Hong Kong!)
She charge me and my sister 250/hr per 2, dont know whether it's reasonable since I dont know how much the other charge...
I may ask her see if she can help if you are interested.

Hi

I also learnt Cantonese at British Council a few years ago and found it a good course and also a great way to meet like minded ex-pats, so I'm guessing the Mandarin is of a similar quality.

The Pimsleur Method seems (to me) to be the most effective for learning tones and language concepts. It doesn't use any written material (so no need to bother with Pinyin) just as we learn as a child would (most kids I know can speak beore they read, would be interested to meet one that can read first...). It's expensive but it works! You can search Google for Pimsleur and find many sites espousing its virtures. Can buy at Amazon.

Also, here is a great site that describes the origins of Chinese characters, includes an online dictionary, as well as most 'double' words (well that's what I call 'em!) as opposed to other dictionaries that just show single character definitions.

http://www.zhongwen.com/

You can also do online pinyin chat for some pinyin practice, and other useful links, etc.

Of course, nothing beats having a Chinese partner ;-)

Cheers
