Funny ....

There was a freudian slip about a click and I though you were complaining about having lost your ...

Tried turning the laptop on / off? Have you turned the volume down? Changed the system sound settings?

The click sound upon navigation is played by Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer (does not have anything to do with other sound settings in Windows ME).

Either the sound for navigation has been disabled, or the the .WAV file for the click sound is corrupt.

Enabling the click sound (navigation):
Note: these instructions are for Windows98, but you can figure it out for Windows ME:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Sounds.
  2. In the Events box, click Start Navigation, enter START.WAV under the "name"box, and then click OK.
  3. Close Control Panel.

As you can see above, the file in question is START.WAV. With Windows 98, this would have been located under .../WINDOWS/MEDIA/
You can simply conduct a search on your drive for the file to make sure the file itself exists and is in working condition.

Are other sound indicators, like on Windows Startup etc. working okay?

Hope this helps.

did a lot of meandering around innards of Win ME found sound.wav and it is where it should be and it works BUT not when I tap on the touchpad. All other sounds are ok The Search will continue later this evening

DA CLICK IS IN DA HOUSE!

curiouser and curiouser...

Having girded my loins and with machete in hand I prepared for a foray to find my click, AND guess what?
It had returned all by itself
T
hanks to one and all for the pointers.
