I quit smoking 3 years ago. Cold Turkey. Smoked for 10 years before that.

I get the urge EVERY TIME.

What makes me go on? The realization that I'm living a healthier lifestyle.

It's definitely mind over matter. I don't let it affect me too much. It's tough, but you know what they say..."what doesn't kill you makes you stronger"...

Other than that, ever tried reading Allen Carr's 'The Easy Way to Stop Smoking'??

And the previously mentioned, well i dont smoke anymore so i can have ONE it wont matter im in controll now.
Im not gonna fall for that one again.
The key is to forgett to smoke in a way :P

intersting thread. i think that one person telling the next how to quit smoking is like one person telling the next how to lose weight. we all vary in self control, strenghts and weaknesses. what screws everything for us is that both smoking and eating are not purely objective, but are emotionally linked. i'm depressed, feeling run down, i'll have a hi carbo hit. i'm feeling shit and hung over, i'll have a fried fatty food fix.

the logic behind both problems is simple - u are addicted to smoking - u need to wean ur system off the drug. simple. until the human factor comes in, huh? want to lose weight - easy. eat food that supplies less energy than u need on a daily basis, and u will live off ur fat. when it is down to the level u like, increase ur diet to maintian an energy status quo (ie increase ur food but only so your weight stays the same, not up or down). easy. NOT.

it's the cravings that hit us. as an aside, one wonders what the real correlation between smoking and obesity is. i wanna smoke, no, i'll have a snack instead. oh, bugger, i gotta lose weight, i'll have a smoke. oh shit, i gotta quit, gimme a snack. oh poop, can i bot a smoke, anyone?

a lot of posts here talk of will power etc. it seems that is the only key. u cant just "want" to stop. u've got to really want to. and u gotta not give in. is a shame we aren't robots...

BTW, i reckon the reason most smokers back in Oz are so relaxed at work is cos they have to go on the street to smoke. so u spend 5 min every hour wathcing the world go by. so it's probably more the break than the smoke! (just a thought!). go try the same thing with some placebo, eg a cup of coffee (decaf, no sugar ) and see how u feel. non-smokers dont take this break properly (they might stop work, but they don't go out for a breath of "fresh" air, stretch the legs, focus the eyes further than 2 feet away.. take 5)...

Slamming is on a distinguished road
As an ex smoker (of 12 years+), I went cold turkey and am 3 months and counting. Still think about it all the time (especially when out, in that lull between rounds and after a few rounds) and difficult as friends and other half are still puffing the evil weed.

You need cold determination, stubborness (you're proving a point right?) and a moment of truth (i.e. when you're hacking up half a lung every time a section of the escalator breaks down).

Good luck!
