Dogs anyone? Please give dogs a home, begs desperate carer NIKI LAW Peter Yim has had to quit his job to look after 40 cross-breed dogs left in the care of a charity where he used to be a volunteer. He says funds are running out and food supplies are dwindling. Picture by Dominic Nahr Animal-lovers are being beseeched to adopt 40 dogs that have been under the care of a man in Hunghom since July, when the charity which supported them was wound up. Peter Yim, who used to be a part-time volunteer at Love Pet Action, said he was at his wits' end after the death of the charity's financial sponsor, businesswoman and dog- lover Nicolette Liu Suet-ki. Mr Yim, whose valiant efforts have earned the praise of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, has quit his job as an advertising salesman to care for the dogs full time. Since then, he has found homes for 30 of his pure-bred charges, but still has 40 mixed-breed dogs. Owing three months' rent on the basement kennels, Mr Yim is fast running out of funds and has only 10 bags of food donated by the SPCA. The dogs go through 1-1/2 bags a day and cost a minimum of $30,000 a month to support. "My last hope is that people with open minds can adopt these mongrels and give them a second chance at life. I don't want them to die," Mr Yim said. "The dogs we have were either left on the street, abandoned at our door, or taken to grooming salons and vets and left behind by their owners." The SPCA last week sent staff to assess Mr Yim's dogs, said spokeswoman Rebecca Ngan Yee-ling. "The dogs all have great characters and are very healthy. Mr Yim was also very helpful. We will try to do what we can but we are almost at full capacity ourselves." Mr Yim's refusal to abandon or put down the dogs has come at a high price, putting his marriage on the line and losing him many friends. "My wife and I argue every day. And all my relatives blame me for burdening my family. My children have turned against me. Everyone thinks I am crazy and stupid but I know what I am doing is right," Mr Yim said tearfully. "If I have to sacrifice 40 lives for my marriage and peace of mind then I would rather not have it. I know choosing this path gives the dogs a chance at life but unfortunately it condemns me." Love Pet Action was set up by Mr Yim's friend, Liu, six years ago to care for stray and unwanted dogs in Hunghom. "Look at Bean here," said Mr Yim, pointing to a dark-haired mutt. "We took him in after he was run over by a car when he was one ... He's five now." In addition to Mr Yim's voluntary help, the charity used to have four paid part-time staff. But since Liu died in July, Mr Yim has been working alone. "I couldn't expect the part-time staff to work for free," Mr Yim said. "And it was impossible for me to continue taking leave for an unforeseeable period and I could not spend the whole day at work answering calls from people interested in adopting dogs." Liu's husband, who did not wish to be named, said: "She used to give all the money she earned at the trading company to the dogs. I didn't like it, but I couldn't say anything. But now she has passed away we cannot afford it any more." Mr Yim has posted website appeals and contacted other animal organisations, but cannot find anyone to adopt the dogs. "People say I am a dog-lover but I'm not," Mr Yim said. "Actually, I hate them because I have had to sacrifice so much for them. But if I don't do anything they will all die. I am doing this because I value life, not because I like dogs." * Those wishing to adopt a dog or donate food can contact Mr Yim at 6358 4091.

Automatic Feeders? Has anyone seen any pet store or place where they sell automatic feeders?? It's for my cat. I've seen plenty of those feeders you fill up and food will just constantly flow into the bowl, but I'm talking more about the timed ones, that will just release a portion so your pet doesn't keep on eating endlessly!

does anyone else find it amusing that the cat and dog threads are right next to each other. Bit of an irony, if you can't love 'em, eat 'em. That's a joke BTW, I love cats (but I can't eat a whole one)

I always see stray cats near the river around Shatin. Of course catching one might not be so easy. I don't know about their health, but if you catch one and have it vaccinated, health check, etc. the total cost would surely be much below the 6,000 dolahs you have to pay for in a shop. You also help a poor stray cat... Maybe I should start a business...

buying a cat in hong kong I think it is important that people do not buy animals in pet stores or in the market etc is that it encourages them to breed more of these poor animals in horrific conditions. All of the shelters have wonderful animals looking for homes. If you are worried about their background, get a puppy or a kitten. I wouldn't trust what you get in these pet stores anyway!

I am curious about what breed of cat costs $6000? We have 3 British shorthairs, a blue female, a blue and white male and a lilac point female, all 2 months apart of each other in age, never paid more than $2500 each. IMHO, the British shorthair is one of the nicest natured cat breeds, and best suited as a family cat, and apartment living. I absolutely adore our 3. When we were considering what cats we wanted, the Egyptian mao was at the top of our list, as its the cat of champions, and the ancestral blood line of all domestic cats, trully stunning feline, but you cannot buy them in Hong Kong, as I'd love to have one. The cat in the movie cat woman was an Egyptian mao. Egyptian mau below http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=11884679&size=l from what I have researched, these cats have one of the most affectionate personalities of all cat breeds. British shorthair are also in the same personality category. Last edited by Skyhook; 20-07-2007 at 12:12 AM.
