Dubai vs. Singapore

Okay, strange place for this question.

If given the choice, would you live in Dubai or Singapore?

Given the following:
- Dubai is booming in my field, and I really enjoy the work here.
- I am ABC, and speak Mandarin.
- I have a cultural affinity for (sub) Asia.
- I do not have a cultural affinity for Middle East.
- I am single and like going out and meeting people, especially women.
- I don't like to own a car.
- I don't like 50 deg. Celcius weather.
- Dubai is booming in my field, and I really enjoy the work here.

It dosen't look like you need any help there. I feel as long as you are single, you should go where you find good work. You'll get a chance to experience something different. As far as I know, Dubai is very flashy, yet good for businesses. Women in the middle-east countries are not so open to meet men, but Dubai is more westernized, so it maybe different there. No doubt the weather is very hot; and that is why you have air conditioners

So, whatever you decide to do, good luck for it!

hi all,

i am not sure if someone is still clued in to this forum but thought will check and continue on from above. i am a bachelor/male/25 and i have been offered a job at Dubai (USD 120000) and Singapore (USD 110000). both offers are quite good but i am not sure which one to take. do you think the salary offered is good enough to manage in dubai and singapore? as a bachelor, which city will have more to offer? i love singapore but i am biased as i have been there before and have friends. dubai is a new territory....not sure what to expect....will really appreciate if anyone here can help me in evaluating the offer and also give some on views on these two cities? thanks for your time....

Take Singapore.

your quality of life will be much higher for your expenses, goods are cheaper and the night life is fun and approachable.

I spent the last 6 months living there and had a blast with many ABC, malay, indonesian and singaporean friends.

I haven't been to Dubai, but if its anything like my experiences in Qatar.. do NOT go there unless the money is insanely better and that represents a serious life goal for you.

I've met my share of miserable people on holidays from Dubai...
Don't fall for the trap and become one of the fiscally superficial. ife's to short.
Go to singapore, enjoy summer all year round and spend your weekends on northern Indonesian private beaches that cost only $20SGD to get to.

work-wise: Its been a little weird as an aussie that people in HK finish work so late. But im glad to say Singapore is a middle ground where people start a little later and finish at 6 sharp.

EDIT:
All that said, I'm happy to call Hong Kong my new home. there's some very exciting communities and not to mention the food is great!

Have you been to Singapore? It's hardly cool there! The heat's a little lower, but the humidity is much higher.

the other thing you might want to take into consideration is which place will give you most career opportunities. The Middle East is where many opportunities are right now - this could be a consideration. Dubai is also much closer to Europe - sure you cannot get to cheap Indonesian beaches, but you could take long weekends in Europe on that salary quite easily....
