Wine into HK when moving

Ive got a fair few gallons of wine in the cellar a lot of which is ready for drinking so when we move in a couple of months ideally we'd like to bring it with us. if we slip it into the container what will happen at the other end? presumably theyll slap an import duty on it? and if so what do they value the wine as....? as these things were bought in a variety of countries at a low relative price then its not an issue. but if they could value them at todays prices then its not worth bringing them. bit of a left-field question but any feedback would be much appreciated.

Depends on how much you have.

I moved here 3mths ago and brought along 20-30 bottles slipped into various boxes in my shipping.

Be careful - some shipping companies are a bit stricter. The best thing I can suggest is don't bother discussing with the Shipping company manager when they survey your place. when the actual packers come in just ask them to pack it in with various items.

I belive the duty is like 100%.

Take your chances if you want.

wine moved from the uk

we moved here last year, and told the moving company we had app 80 bottles. it was packed separetly in a box at the front of the container so that the customs could easily see it and not mess up the rest of our stuff further down in the container. when the cargo arrived here by ship we realised the customs did not bother opening the container and we got our wine as was. the customs duty for commercial use is 80-90% of the value. maybe we were lucky, but maybe they do not focus on wine for self use?

i hope this helps

just remember that f you have not declared it and you are caught you will be lumped with a 80%+ duty on top of a fine for not declaring it.

With that much wine you need to make sure you have the appropriate wine shiller otherwise in the weather here expect to have 30 caes of expensive vinegar.

good luck.
