| | | Oktoberfest Sometime in October the Marco Polo hotel will do it's annual Oktoberfest bash. It's pretty good fun with a huge tent, German bands, good food ( pork knuckle variety) but only a very limited collection of beers. In fact last year I remember they only had Veltins lager ! That's right, only one lager in Oktoberfest and that too one of the most insignificant and undistinguished brews from Deutschland.
Anyway check out the real thing in Munchen, starting next week http://www.realbeer.com/edu/o-festprimer2003.php

| | | We came back fairly disappointed (and a bit err ... weighed down by the fluids) from the fest.
-- Beers were $50 and they only had Jever. One would have thought they'd have a few on tap / bottle. I fully understand the concept of sponsored beers.. but not at an Oktoberfest and not at $50.
-- The food was expensive and err ... rather stereotypical.
-- The band was ok.
Personally think we'd have done a lot better by staying at our favorite german bar in Lan Kwai Fong, sampling the beers, schnapps and food.

| | | Yeah the one solitary beer is my pet grouse. But for me the food was good and the company was better and the general merriment was a welcome change from cramped bars , esp the open-air atmosphere and the harbour views ( though ships seemed to have been disappearing after a few pints for some people !)
I thought the band did its best and lots of people had lots of fun. Also I didn't mind the freebies esp the 16 bottles of beer we got on our way out !
But yes it certainly is expensive

| | I've always wanted to try food other than the 10 items you find at every place .. saurkraut, sausages, pork knuckles and some mashed potatoes.
Agree, most of these events boil down to the company....

| | | I thought it was incredible value. $45 for entrance which included two tickets for two beers, and you also got 4 free bottles in a box. Since it cost $55 for an extra beer once you were inside. I went out and back in twice. Six beers for $135 plus all night entertainment is incredible value. Not to mention the 12 boxed bottles of beer. I had to take most of those home. | |
