Furnishing a home

My apartment lease starts next month, so I need to furnish the whole place. The dilema is I will be here 24 months tops, so I don't want to dump tons of money into furniture, but I don't want ugly furniture either.

What have others done in the past with similar situation?

not Ikea...

I would go to price right and some smaller shops, as you can normally find better deals on things. I know personally, Jusco and price-rite were perfect for most needs, while whatever I wanted to be stylish and over the top nice I went to To Kwa Wan.

I think between the two, furnishing an apt would be relatively cheap and you dont have to have anything that looks cheaply made or deal with the horror that is Ikea customer service (speaking from experience).

Whatever you decide to do, avoid Ikea on Saturdays and Sundays at all cost

Will any of the stand alone furniture stores give a good deal if I buy all of the furniture through them?

Pricerite gave us a discount when we bought a heap at once and they don't charge for delivery or installation unlike Ikea if you buy a certain amount. If you can't avoid the weekends( I reccommend you do) go see Ivan at Pricerite in Causeway Bay - he was really helpful. Also depending on your style the place on the 15th floor of Windsor House opposite IKEA is pretty cheap. Lately I have been looking at a few classifieds on some of the expat sites and if you can deal witht he hassle some people leaving HK offer up their stuff at good prices.

Also you might like to keep everything simple... A bed, caoch and tv; a desk if you work on it alot. I got all mine second hand except for my bed. Now when I feel comfortable, I'd upgrade a 19" LCD or get a cool standing light. I put money on things that I will be able to take with.

Where is Jusco in Causeway Bay? I tried to find it, and ended up going in circles.

Yes, I've got bits and pieces from them before (stools, chairs, TV cabinets etc.). Cheap and cheerful stuff they do.

I think for cheap stuff, they charge for extra for delivery. Do go and take a look. Remember they are cheap and cheerful (like the TV cabinet I got the surface is laminated with paper and not wood - nicely done but still it is paper so if you have a chip, you will see the material inside rather than just a dent on a piece of wood, that sort of things...)
