is right in the heart of the city if thats what you are looking for. Key thing is what are you doing in Auckland? Are you going to have a car? If so this would be better www.barrycourt.co.nz
Much better to get out of the city after a day or two because NZ has so much more to offer. Bella Vista motels www.bellavistamotels.co.nz are all around the country and really great. Hi, still bad with names+directions, on the top of Queen Street, Ak central, Kiwi Backpackers is a cross between backpacker and hotel-type accomodation. I think in value it is reasonable, nicest etc. They must have a website. Just on the cusp of the city is Newton 121 (121 Newton Rd) they have even better, self contained large units with also kitchens, and at the same rates as K.Backpackers, but its not quite as central, v.popular people in the know, booked up quickly. Also on Albert St there is a popular place I THINK its Novotel (franchise keeps changing!) which has discount rates incertain seasons, good standard rooms.
Prices always change as companies try to outdo each other off-season.

There is a backpackers on the left as you go up where Queen Street meets Mayoral Drive - above merchant Mezze Bar but I think the one you talk about was on the right and has been pulled down.

Thanks guys! I booked with Auckland City YHA. They are very friendly and helpful. They also informed us that the hostel would be quite busy and noisy during the weekend.
