And to many destinations it costs more than the best offers from traditional telcos.

Wow, full of info! Thanks guys! So what is the conclusion? I am using SmarTone and trust me, when you stand in a wrong 'feng shui' in Clear Water Bay, you have to be the antenna for your phone in order to get a good reception!

I am planning to get a registered number with IDD service? Which is the best as in good reception, good customer service, etc?

I just got a new cellular plan here in the U.S. with a quad-band phone. According to the sales rep, this phone can be used all over the world including HK. Anyone knows if this is true ? I have a Samsung XGH-X495 with the SIM chip.

Nearly all dual-band (GSM) phones will work here. Tri and quad likewise. You need to confirm that the frequencies supported are 900 or 1800 MHz. But your phone may be locked to your phone service provider preventing you from using a sim from another network.

The carrier told me that they can unlock the code on the phone but only after 3 months. I am in no hurry to have it unlocked. I won't take another trip to HK unitl next year. BY the way, are you a local of HK ? Thanks for the reply!
