Salary?

I have an interview for a new post later this week.

US company making garments, has a small HK office of 7-10 ppl and are looking for an office manager.

They are looking for somebody already here so they do not have the cost of relocating somebody, therfore, I doubt the package will be a full expat one. Need to know what sort of salary I can ask for. Any suggestions welcome.

Hey Sand, I would not raise your hopes on there being any expat benefits at all.

No, but they will probably go for a decent holiday, full medical etc.
I will try for some kind of housing allowance but this is not critical as I have very low housing costs (I live with my wife and her mum).

What is the normal holiday (vacation) amount in the US?

The Chinese barter system works well for salaries as well. Start high, say 500k / month, and work your way down until you get to a level you're both happy with.

Saltwater, a daydreamer? ;-)

If he really starts with 500k (500.000 HK$) per month, they will kick his ass immediately I suppose...
They are talking about an office manager leading 7-10 people and not the the CEO of Cathay Pacific or so.

I would be happy with half of that figure.

Well when I said to work your way down until you find a level you're both happy with, you'll most likely have to move yours down, down, down until it ends up in four figures. Probably depends how much you really want the job.

Saltwater, it will be a long way down.

I think the figure is likely to be closer to a 10th. Slightly more if there is no package.

Im not on an expat deal - remember that its normal to get a 13 month salary. Yes, ask for full medical.

Im not sure but say your salary is 50k per month. But your contract says 40k per month + 10k housing allowance, I dont think that you have to pay income tax on the 10k. Does anyone know?

You would have to declare the benefit that you receive as housing to the HK IRD. Then they will calculate what portion of that is taxable and add the tax to your income tax bill.
