Need a lesson in dehumidifiers...

This dehumidifier business is all new to a Sydneysider.... generally speaking do I need to put dehumidifiers in every room / closet etc??

I have a big capacity unit delivered tomorrow (400 sq ft), for living and dining area - Is it reasonable to suggest that you could alternate day/ night in different areas, or do you need to run them full on all the time in each room.... also do you need one in the closet AND in the bedroom, or will one in the bedroom suffice?

BTW we live in a gd fl flat, 2000 sq ft surrounded by trees, so I guess quite humid!

Thanks for any advice

You don't need one for every room. Very much depends on whether you keep windows open or you use your aircon. If the former, it will be humid and you need the hunmidifier. With regular use of aircon you will need less use.

Try and keep it close to the clothes closet - humidity will destroy your clothes if you are not careful.

This time of the year the humidity is less and therefore there is not much need for the humidifier.

You don;t need to be an expert - you'll soon figure it out. If you have it on for 3-4 hrs and not much water is collected then it shows that it is not necessary.

When drying clothes in a room it will help to have the humidifier on.

Even with a dehumidifier it is wise to get those little dehumidifer boxes from Park 'N Shop/Wellcome and place one in each clothes wardrobe. If you don't the risk is that you will get mould on your leather/suede clothing.

thanks guys!

Just one more Q. can you alternate rooms (e.g. living at night / main bed in day) or does that not work...? i.e. need to keep at a constant to be effective?

ta..

If you keep the doors to your rooms open, you shouldn't have to move it too much. And remember what Katanga said...if you use your aircon (who in their right mind wouldn't!!), you're already dehumidifying your flat (thats what an air cond does...thats why you see the dripping water outside every building in HK) And if you have new/split air con's, they may have a 'dry' setting that is in fact dehumidifying without the cooling, so you could run it on 'dry' during the day when you're out and switch to 'cool' when your home.

In addition to the closet boxes from PnS, I also use the small packets in every drawer in the summer. But we're getting into dry season so you shouldn't need dehum. for a few months now...
