Techno Wizardry Equipment Question

I'm looking to put together or buy a 'power tower' to use for graphics work - using CorelDraw or Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, and some form of 3D modelling program (when i find something better than Bentley MicroStation thats affordable!)

Ive noticed from the Dell website that computer equipment is considerably cheaper here than in blighty but i cant find any firms other than Dell - does anyone know any?

Have you hit up the computer markets? Or are you looking for brand name only?

Baron is an unknown quantity at this point.
Have you been to the 'Golden computer Arcade' in Sham shui Po yet? There is a large area of computer parts from cases to small fans, or ready built systems. I think its the best place for building a tower anyway, also its well priced as well so that helps. I think you exit Sham shui Po MTR at exit D (there is a sign above the exit telling you 'Golden Arcade'. There is also streets of markets next to the building, so your girlfriend can go shopping if she hates computers
When you leave the exit, its the building directly across the road to the left (on the corner). Downstairs is the level you want.

Even Wiki has something to say about Sham Shui Po. Maybe we should update it with those MTR directions :-)

And fancy that, the link about Apliu Street links back to Geoexpat's own article.

are the places in Sham shui Po legit or will i get home - eagerly unrap my new Gb of RAM and find it doesnt work, or worse, nukes the fan....

Is it advisable to build a whole new comp from there? I mean, in terms of value - will it be soo much cheaper that its not worth just ordering one from dell?

Well if you're not into unbranded end-products, there are HP HK Online Store and IBM/Lenovo Online Shop . Fortress and PCCW also have (or at least did have) limited selections online, but not configurable. Fortress also carry a few set config ranges in their stores, but so do some stores in the computer malls.

Having said that, I got my current one built in 2 mths ago in Mongkok CC because Dell and HP offerings at that time didn't have my preferred options in certain specific areas. Now it could be different. Ironically, with an unbranded built PC you have more control and awareness of branding of components going in than with a branded end-product.

Hey HKfella,

I'm a little anxious about getting a comp. built in a little backstreet store/ or building it myself since i'm a bit out of touch with hardware - but i'd def rather have more input over the actual hardware that goes in. The fortress comps only have graphics accelleraters - not cards which is a no-go for my requirements - where in mongkok did u go and what guarentees can u get?
