cosmokat will become famous soon enough
Geez...and I always thought the long lunches were just habit for the few in my group, but I see it's a common thing among many of the locals. I've been here since mid April and I find the biggest difference to the states is the lower level of professionalism in the office amongst a lot of HK'ers. I'm sure you all have the belchers in the office...

Yeah I have one sits opposite me that lets a really loud one rip, on average, every ten minutes.

And this person is a girl about my age!

What is the job that you do that belching (a perfectly acceptable social habit in China) affects the professionalism with which it is done?

Salty, I have one sitting in an adjacent cubicle that "erupts" every 5 mins. Go figure.

Work hours, though regulated in hk, are often poorly enforced (or should I say, 'adhered' to?). Mine starts at 9:30am and ends at 6:30pm, though I know others who drift in around 9:45 or 10am (sometimes even 10:30!) and leave between 6:30 to 7pm. Depending on the nature of the work (and its load), some will finish around 8pm, but never beyond that. At times, I'm the only one in the office. Gets kinda creepy sometimes!

yea, those hours suck but everyone has to take into account the time that they aren't actually working.

With the advent of the internet, the time people spend at work v the time people actually spend working has dramatically changed.

There is some statistic that says that on average, a normal office worker in the States spend 2 of his/her 8 hours not doing work related things - but on the net surfing or running personal errands.

If you just look at this forum and when people are posting and replying, you can see that happening.

In my limited experience, HK workers tend to take long lunches and spend a fair amount of time socializing, but tend to actually stay at work longer to balance that out.

Just my .02

Office hours are 9-6pm with 1 hour for lunch. I am the last to arrive at 9.15am and the first to leave at 6.30pm. The Hkers tend to chat all day and then play catch up in the evenings. Unproductive if you ask me.
