Who really invented Curry? I always thought it was the Indians from India. This afternoon I was corrected by a group of old timer Brits who absolutely insist that the Brits invented it and took it to India. Can anyone clarify this as I have bet some $$s that the Indians invented curry.

The British Army did when in India they added the fiery spices to mask the "flavour" of the local meat.

Excuse me but the British may have invented the word "curry" but they did NOT invent the flavour. What bollocks that "The British Army did when in India they added the fiery spices to mask the "flavour" of the local meat." Sorry DB. For God's sake the Indidan's had been using the spices for centuries before that. If they weren't being used to spice/flaour food or the "local meat" what else would they have done with the spices. The word curry is just that: a word. It is too wide etc to even debate who invented curries. I don't think any Indian is going to try to take credit for Thai curries for example !

OK Thai curries aside. I was referring to Indian curries. I am sure that the masalas that go in the curry were invented long before the Brits arrived on Indian shores. I even read somewhere that the Brits invaded India for their Masalas and spices. Last edited by JaredHK; 24-09-2005 at 08:22 AM.

In an ironic twist I heard that it was the Indians who first ate greasy stodgy food with warm flat beer and the British army took it back to the UK where it has remained since. The Vindaloo is a British concoction though.

Never heard about the stodgy food and beer coming from India. You might start saying next that spuds and boiled cabbage also originated from there ! Agree the vindaloo is a british term and to be frank it is never used in India. Likewise so is the Balti which literally translates to "Bucket". Where you see the word Karahi it simply means frying pan.
