IT Professional considering move to HK

Hi all.

I've been reading the posts on this thread. Really good resource for info outside of friends who live in HK.

I'm considering a move to HK with 8 years in the IT industry. I've read some of the boards out there, jobsdb, monster.hk, etc. Seems like there are jobs out there but finding one that pays a decent wage might be tough.

Does anyone know any IT people who moved to HK from outside? I'm not coming on an expat package or anything, so everything would be out of pocket.

Any thoughts would be great.

I came here from the U.K. on a semi-expat package years ago. My package has shrunk since then (I can't believe I said that ). There are plenty of posts here asking the same questions about cost of living here and expected salary. Take a little time to research and you will be more the wiser

I more or less know the costs of living since I have lots of friends who live there, but none are in IT. Most teach english or are in finance. I'm also considering going on my own, so I wouldn't get any help from my employer.

I looked through a few pages of posts and didn't find anyone specifically asking about IT.

I'll do a search though.

Any one else who has any direct ideas.. always open to thoughts.

Thanks

IT is a wide field so you need to be more specific. What sector are you talking about working in, what is your speciality in IT etc.

I am in IT in an investment bank and I can assure you that if you are a hard core techy in C++, Java or C# then the market is awash with jobs assuming you have used those skills to build trading systems.

Sorry, can't tell you much outside of the INv Banking industry.

cheers

Seconded - and if you do happen to be a "hard core techy" with trading systems experience in C# or C++, drop me a line! I moved out from Aus to take up a job the company couldn't fill locally, now I'm trying to hire someone else, without much local success. So in banking at least, you must be in with a pretty good chance.

Doug.

I am looking for people with the same skills !

do you fancy coming to work for us ?

The market here is pretty crap for really good techies because everyone wants to be a manager.

I am serious ....

your chances are good but not as hot as the developers.

you would be in the same league IF you are hard-core Linux/Solaris and rather than being just able to "build" you should be a strong sysadmin.

If your Cisco certification is one of the key ones then your networking skills coupled with sysadmin should be very valueable.

Send me your details and I'll look at your CV and say if we are looking in my place.

OK this is what i have heard when asking around..if your into PHP, SQL, CGI, and such, your up for some serious competition mainly from India and the mainland.
They have good skills, and they (usaly) speak english + a local language. And they work for about 2000/month plus food. kinda hard to beat i think.
And from what i hear the code they produce is clean and well written.

I agree you cannot beat the Indians for quality of code etc and we use a lot of outsource but I still see a big gap in technical knowledge coupled with business knowledge which is why I was specific that if you have the tech and the tradin systems knowledge you will rock.

On the Infra side I have not seen much use of the outsource staff. Don't know why.
