Question Should I buy a laptop here in US and take it to HK?

Hi, there:

I am packing and just wondering whether I should buy a new laptop here in the States and take it with me to HK.

Some questions here, I hope I can get some advice from you guys:

1. Can I use the laptop there?
Not only the voltage, but also other things, like DSL, cable, wirless, and any other related local systems that have the connections with the computer, will that be working in HK on the computer I buy from US?

2. What is the price difference of the big brand laptop btw US and HK?
I assume all the big brands should have representative stores in HK, right?

I just want to get a general idea, wether I would be better off buy a new one in HK?

Thank you!

All the connectivity will work just fine. You might get slightly better prices in the US from places like Amazon for top end brands like Toshiba / Sony and you have the satisfaction of knowing that you've got something genuine.

If you're going get something like a Dell ... you can get the same gear anywhere.

Most of the wireless gear is the same as that in N. America. Almost all laptops now are multivoltage (check your AC adapter - if its input range covers 220V) and you'll only need a cheap plug adapter available easily in HK. On wireless, it's just that instead of drywall, the walls in HK homes are brick and concrete - that can hinder wireless between rooms depending on size and shape. But range expanders are available.

On prices, compare those on websites like ibm hk vs the us one, same with dell (dell.com.hk). you could even try sony or toshiba but I'm not familiar with them. No sales taxes in HK (as yet!). General experience was you could get slightly higher end laptops your end than in HK, but that could be changing.

You will get a better deal there if you buy a US brand (e.g. Apple or Dell) . If you buy a japanese brand it depends. Try the local stores web sites and/or the major brand local site and compare the prices.

there are some shops in HK in Mong Kok and Shum Shui Po provided really cheap price. I think it's more convenient to buy it in HK. If you come earlier you can ask some HK local university student (both current and old) to buy it in school, they have a big discount in buying laptop in school at the beginning of semster
