Depends on where, or around London you live. Having lived there a couple of times, you soon learn to get away from the zone 1 areas. As for work, there are a lot more options, but then again it depends what line of work you're in? Its not cheap!!! Last edited by Baron; 16-09-2005 at 12:52 PM.

rent and transportation in london is more expensive than hk..the transportation system sucks over there! job opportunities-wise, think it is better in london since you dont have to be bi-lingual...yeah, what field is your friend in?

The standard of living seems higher there but you will be earning more money so it balance it out. Although most things are cheaper in HK but i think the Pounds last longer in my purse than dollars. I can save more $$ back in UK!

I think it's hard to generalise. I reckon I am earning more gross (and a lot more net) here than I would for the same job in London. Costs for the sort of places I would live (upmarket city centre apartments) are much the same. Transportation is infinitely better here than in London - which is why I would always try to live in Zone 1 so I could walk to work.

When looking to move here I saw something that said earning 30k HK$ per month is like earning 30k pounds per year in the UK and I reckon thats probably not far off. London transport is nowhere as good as HK but still up there and if you buy a monthly pass your transport costs are quite fixed becasue for a flat fee you can ride all the buses and trains within a set zone. Highly reccommend trying to live and work in Zone1/2 and buying the pass to cover both zones. Its totally flat so walking is easy and biking too if you can handle the traffic but if you plan to take the tube don't live more than a 10minute walk from it because in winter that walk gets quite miserable. Good Luck I loved it there.

Have these friends ever been to London? Wouldn't it be easier for them to get on here? Or is this one of those "my friend .. err .. really my friend" type deals. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/colourmap.gif

I lilve in london at the moment. From what I can work out rent is much the same, but day to day costs such as taxi's etc are more expensive over here. It is a great city though, and lots of fun. I agree with the earlier comment though - do not get sucked into going out in the centre - find a suburb in zone 1/2 and get to know it . I spend most of my time in Chelsea but Clapham, Hampstead, Notthinghill and Old street areas are very popular too.
