Question Fishing/Angling in HK?

Been searching around for angling information here in HK. But to date have not managed to locate much info. So I figured I might try my luck here.

1) Are there any angling supply shops nearby Aberdeen? Or are there any in HK period. There must be a shop somewhere as I've seen lot's of people fishing where I stay. But can't really understand what they are trying to tell me when I tried asking them (though I do speak passable cantonese).

2) Are there any fishing charters in HK I can contact for off-shore fishing? And any idea what their charges are?

3) Any fellow anglers here in this forum?

Cheers!

UR in luck!

and...
3.yes

Fresh water fishing check Water Supplies Dept. website and buy a 3 yr licence for the HK reservoirs. Cost only about $24HK. Or go to 1/F Immigration Tower in Wanchai to their office and bring your HKID Card. Simple.

Or come with us to Tai Mei Tuk (on the main Road) to a private fish pond...about $250 all day including parking.

Sea fishing..from the shore, obvious but from boats, most of the shops will arrange trips for you. Deep sea, about 20Kms out will last all day with a 0700 hrs KO costing maybe $700.

Shops..two in Aberdeen town Centre...one near the HSBC bank. About three good ones in Wanchai plus a few in mongkok area.

Send me an email and you can join a couple of pals and I for fresh or sea fishing....but other than deep sea and the TMT pond..don't expect any whoppers. The environment couple with the long line netting used by the HK fishing boats has all but killed the sea-sport. I'll also pass u more details on the shops.

Fishing over the next two weeks

Folks,

I'm relatively new to HK (3 months) and am looking to take my father fishing some time over the next 2 weeks (weekdays work fine).

I'm interested in either off shore (if you think it's any good) and will share the cost - or pond fishing.

Neither of us has any equipment in HK and would look to probably hire (or buy at a push) equipment for the duration.

Any body planning any trips and have some spare places coming up?

RBDB,

For the reservours I believe you need to be a HK resident as they will requrie this when you apply for the licence. Of course you'll need to purchase your own equipment. About $500 will see you right for a full decent set of kit including bait. The shop in Aberdeen town centre is fine for this and there are a couple of places in Wanchai as well, one rather large one in Ship Street, on the 1/F near the KFC, it's off Johnson Road, where the trams run.

However, if you only want a day out, then best go for the Tai Mei Tuk option I suggested earleir, as above. About $250 gets you the whole day including gear and bait. If you choose this option, ask the local anglers or staff for advice as it's a diffiicult fish if you don't know the pockets of area in the lake and technique peculiar to that pond.

Good luck!

Sarawesi,

Thanks very much for the advice - if we get out there (TMT that is) I'll drop a note back to say how it went !

Sorry for the late reply. There is a large-ish fishing shop in Wanchai. It's on the 1/F & 2/F on Ship Street (I think) junction with Queens Road East. If you find the KFC, it's near that. They arrange deep sea overnight fishing trips and there are loads of photos but they all seem to be local lads, so if you are not good with Cantonese, might be difficult to communicate. They head down south of HK and sometime also east. However, I don't think they rent anything other than a couple of obscenely expensive Japanese digital reels (like 12K to buy!). Having said that, for about 3K you could probably kit yourself out fairly well.

Another option is head to Apliu St in ShamsuiPo, there is an MTR exit on that street. Near the junction with Yen Chau St and actually along the street are some 2nd hand rods/reels stalls. Rods are OK, but reels watch out, perhaps better buy your reels and tackle new.

If you decide to head over to the Wanchai, shop, private me and I'll find out the exact address for you.

the site is all in Chinese, but you can easily navigate around the catches. In the row of 4 buttons, click the button on the right. cost per person is HK$1600 + $100 for bait, inclusive of equipment/food.
Boat departs on friday evening and returns Midday Sunday.
