Tax

Hi Everyone,

Can anybody help me about Income Tax, my agency is taking 35% from my salary and i need to find out how much of it is actually going to HK Government.

That would depend on how much you earn. I think the maximum taxable was around 16% or something?

Thanks, that was fast. So that would be 16% of my salary x 35% is this what you mean?

No: all of your salary * 16%.

But that's only if you earn over about HK$500,000 (or maybe a bit more) per year. If you earn less than about HK$100,000 per year then you don't have to pay any tax at all. Between those two it increases gradually.

In addition there is MPF (compulsory savings/pension scheme) which is 5% of your salary up to a MAXIMUM of HK$1,000 per month.

But is does depend a little what you do... since you say you are employed through an agency, and you appear to be from the Philippines then (stereotyping horribly, for which I apologise) I wonder if you are here playing in a band or something on a short-term contract. In that case you are subject to different rules.
