work visa

After obtaining your first work visa is it in any way easier second time round or is the process exactly the same? I had the idea that maybe once immigration has processed your first then the documentation would be easier next time and beyond?

The renewals are a mere formality.

I understand the first time round it takes 6 average to process a visa. How long does it take if you then work for another company - is the process the same?

In my case the transfer to a new sponsor was approved approximately 3 weeks after application.

In my case I wasn't required to work my notice. I'm not 100% sure if Immigration will process an application for a change of sponsor whilst you are still employed by the previous sponsor. I suppose there's no reason why not provided that you have evidence of termination, but in my case I was officially unemployed for those 3 weeks.

After you leave, your previous employer needs to notify Immigration that you know longer work for them, so there's your notice given...I applied for a change of sponsorship visa, with the specific date of new employment on the contract (obviously a future date) so there was no confusion. Then my old boss notified immigration a few days AFTER my new employment began...smooth as silk.

It is a bit silly to have to resubmit all your documentation if you're renewing with the same sponsor tho...but we are talking about a governement dept. so no surprise....

Thanks, so is a change of sponsorship visa a less lengthy process than the first work visa i.e. is it less hassle for a new employer then the documentation of a first work visa? Just wondering, from an employer's point of view, if a westerner is 'easier' (less work involved) to sponsor once they've had one work visa through the system. The work visa puts many employers off.

When I did it the paperwork was exactly the same (though not hard - the sponsor has to fill in part of one form and write a short letter). What was quicker was simply the ImmD processing time.
