Do's and Don't's Okay, now this will sound stupid to alot of you, but it may also spawn a whole list of dos and donts which will be helpful to all new comers, and maybe even make up for some of my more stupid/pointless posts... Is it illegal to cross the road if the little man is red? No one seems to do it here. In london everyone races down the pavement (instead of dawdling along like here) and then dodges traffic, but here everyone seems to just stand there, even when there is no traffic. Oh, and whilst im at it, are all bus journeys a set price? U hop on and swipe the octopus then hop off and theres nowhere to swipe?

Great minds think alike ... An FAQ module is under development .. From the profound to the trivial .... lets see if we can cover everything there is to know about HK. To answer your questions: >> jaywalking is an offence liable to a maximum penalty of $2,000. On the mini buses you sometimes have the option of telling the driver where you're getting off and he'll charge you a section fare. On regular buses you are charged depending on where you get on in the route.

Does that mean if i cross when the little man is red and the police or undercover agent spot me, i'll be cuffed and frog marched to the cash point, or will they shot me? I really dont want to upset the police here, they carry guns.

Laughing_Monley: I disagree that no one jaywalks; on my way to the office I have to cross the tram tracks, which are in the middle of the road and lots of people try to make it half way across (onto the tram tracks) even with a red light and the potential of a tram or taxi coming towards them. And no, you won't be shot; I'd be surprised if anyone even stops you. Unlike Europe, you won't have any old ladies beating you with their umbrella for setting a bad example.

Thats what confused me - in the 'city', people were crossing the roads at will, but where i am at the mo (aberdeen) its rare to see anyone making the dash. Now that i think about it, presumably its illegal to cross the road wherever if there is a marked crossing in view?

You'll often see the traffic wardens / cops in Central around the Landmark warning people. They ticket when they have special operations in progress. Eg: http://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/2...01/0801107.htm
