Not that I know the answer (I shipped my 29" TV from the UK eight years ago as one of ten teachests of stuff and was not charged, although this does not mean whether they would tax on used goods being brough in) but are you bringing it in personally or have it shipped?

Oh come on - basically it is ONLY BOOZE, PERFUMES & Petroleum products that are taxed.

Better to Sell the TV in UK - if you bother to sell it here - then you immediately kiss goodbye to recovering anything of the iniquitous VAT you forked out there.

It's relatively easy to buy a decent secondhand large screen TV here at a good discount from the new price, & NONE of the worry of "Will my TV survive the trip from UK".

Just look at the three expat sites for the bargains.

Back to the original question, the answer is NO. Don't forget that HK is a duty-free port (except for those few things AG mentioned and perhaps tobacco).

HKNewBi has a little shameless behaviour in the past
Don't forget cars - hefty 'First Registration Fee'.

I have recently arrived and recently been looking at prices of plasma TVs. Was somewhat amazed that prices of these in HK are SIGNIFICANTLY more expensive than the same product in the UK. And that is including the VAT at 17.5%.

For example, Samsung Plasma on special in Fortress - HK$25,700

Same in the UK including VAT - HK$20,400. Excluding VAT HK$17,300. That is HK$8,400 difference!

Very true. I went back to the UK couple of weeks ago. A 42" Panasonic plasma TV was GBP1,000 in Dixons!!!

Thanks for the tip. Now I know what I will be taxed on, and what items I should not bring.
