Connecting to Broadband

I have recently moved into Manhattan Heights in Kennedy Town and am supposed to be able to plug my laptop into the wall for permanent free internet. Have tried everything, and bought both a network adaptor and an adaptor that goes into the USB port. The latter got my computer onto the net in the computer shop but not then back at the apartment. Can anyone help?

Do you have lights on your network adaptor? If so, is it lit up after plugged in?

I would tell management to have the wall point checked out. It may be a dead socket?

The lights come on okay. Management company tried it in their office and it didnt work there either. It just says no dial tone or something!

With the cable plugged into both the wall socket and the laptop is there a small icon that looks like two computer monitors next to the clock at the bottom right of your screen? If there is, does it have a red cross through it?
Also, go to Start - Control Panels - System - Device Manager and look for a yellow question mark in the list that comes up.

The fact that it connected at the computer shop, shows that there must already be a set-up on there. Perhaps you have to go into settings to allow/give permission for a port number or something? I'm sure discobay will help you out.
