Great, great place. Really chilled and relaxed. If you are only going for the weekend then i would suggest renting a mountain bike and exploring the terrain around the town- lots of paddy fields, rivers and karst rocks. There is a famous cave there though I forget the name. You can go just up river from Yangshuo to, I think, Yang Di, where you can take nice cruises up the river, or even swim in the river. Sunset is breathtaking on the river- if you're into photography you'll love it.
There are lots of tours up there which you can go on if you want to go with other people or just get things done quicker. Breakfast is good there- banana pancakes and the local river prawns are recommended. There is a small restaurant next to a bridge under a big (Banyan?) tree that's good for lunch.
Enjoy!

we fly from Shenzhen to Guilin at 10:40 a.m so will have to make our way to Shenz early morning.Wondering if we should take the train to Lowu and then a cab to the airport or take the ferry early morning-any suggestions? How much is the cab from Lowu to Shenz airport? Also our flt tickets inclusive of taxes etc is ab 3602 for 2 people-do you think thats a good price?? Staying at the mountain retreat for 200RMB a night?? What say???

We flew from Shenzhen and got the ferry from the China Ferry Terminal at Kowloon. I have no ideas about the times etc but the ferry took 1 hour and then there was a free shuttle bus from the ferry terminal in Shenzhen to the airport. We booked our ferry tickets through China Travel Services as you can get a discount. They will have a timetable etc as well. I would therefore recommend that you ask them.

Sazzy's ferry sounds like a better option- we ended up with a cab dricver who was from out of town and knew nothing. We went round in circles until he tried to drop us at a Holiday Inn where the doorman and 2 passers by almost kicked his ass because he was giving Shenzen a bad name! The doorman found us a cab and gave directions!
Guilin airport is quite a away out of town too- expect a 30-40 min drive and don't spend any time there- get straight on the bus and head to Yangshuo. I'm not sure about the Mountain Retreat- never heard of it but accomodation is pretty competitive there and the place we stayed in for 45 quai p/n was tops.
The flight sounds a bit high to me but unfortunately you gots to pay what you gots to pay. It'll be worth it.
Ooh- and climb up the pagoda in Yang Di, I think it's the highest in China or something.
