HANOI - my favourite Asian city - have a great time!!
Go to the Old Quarter and the French Quarter, Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum (if you want to see a dead body+long queues), Temple of literature, Presidents Palace and the big square thingie. Good restaurants in the French Quarter. But I would definitely recommend a tour to Halong Bay - WOW. You can do this in a day, its about a 3 hour bus journey but all worth it. As you walk around Hanoi, there are little huts which are tour organisers.

Have you got your Visa ?

Have fun!

Halong Bay u have to do it in 2 days..so much better than the 1 day tour..u book for about 30 USD the 2 days tour on the bay...fantastic boat trip and you get to sleep on the boat in the middle of the bay. The 30 USD includes, transportation to Halong bay, the boat, the food..everything except the beer !. During those 2 days you go swimming, kayaking ....and of course you enjoy the view...really worth it. In Hanoi, I agree with what has been said before...the temple of litterature is such a quiet and relaxing place...and the old french quater is really great....

Hanoi rocks! So far the tips given to you by Sazzy & Mat are right on the mark about Hanoi. You can spend all day wandering round the old quarter. Halong Bay is lovely but better to do it 2 days - I did the one day which was OK but was stuck with a bunch of people who had no problems about defacing the cave walls with their grafitti . Also the Perfume Pagoda tour is good - worth a 1/2 day excursion. The water puppet theatre was also great - they have daily shows. You've got to go see Uncle Ho's body (tad macabre and totally surreal) but check first to make sure that he hasn't gone to Russia for his annual touch-ups. However my favourite memory of Hanoi is strolling around its lake in the old quarter, watching the city come to life at 5am in the morning, still shrouded in early morning mist - the flower sellers gathering their flowers, the aerobics session involving middle-aged women dancing to Kylie's "I Should be so Lucky" whilst 10 metres on, people practise Tai Chi in fluid graceful moves.

In Hanoi, you have loads of agencies that can organise your tours - Handspan, Kangaroo Cafe etc. Sinh cafe is the biggest operator but with loads of fakes. It's worth to pay a little more to ensure you get a well-organised tour.

Check out Ipa-nima - tad cheaper than what you would get here. http://www.ipanima.com/

Have fun!

*Eat baguettes for every meal with homemade pate and laughing cow cheese spread.

*Go to Cafe Mocha right next to the Cathedral, next to the lake and sample the Red and Yellow beer at breakfast. Produced by their own micro-brewery. Breakfast, lunch and dinner there is also an excellent choice.

*Emperors restaurant in the old French Consulate. Best restaurant in Hanoi. Have travelled there about 10 times and always book one of the tables on the balcony. Fantastic.

*Eat at least 15 times a day....wonderful

*Chill out at night, slowly walk around the lake and relax. Stop off every 15 minutes to eat, drink beer and relax further.

*Drink Vietnamese 'drip' coffee with thick and sweet condensed milk....try every variety you can find. Small glasses often is the best way.

*Get out of bed before 6, and eat noodles and soup at a street stall with the grannies and taxi drivers.

Food, food, food, food. An incredible city full of incredible people. Try and get there for Tet sometime and watch the fireworks around the lake with a million happy people.

Oh, and all the other stuff people said

Hanny,

The best hotel in Hanoi in terms of prestige is the Sofitel. However, if on a budget, there are many many wonderful small hotels that offer cleanliness, friendliness and convenience at a good price. Check the latest Lonely Planet or similar for these. 6 years ago we stayed at one such place and paid US $20/night for huge room and the best french toast breakfast in the world each morning. Enjoy!
