Mmm Fugazi. Saw them two years ago at a benefit for the Homeless with Sleater Kinney and other extra talents. Ian still plays hard as ever...Is it really some twenty years later? Proof that sellout is not required...Proof that the VAST majority of "new" school bands lack both talent and legitimacy.

hi there!

I'm planning to come from Bangkok where I am currently staying for a student exchange program to HK for the NOFX show..
thing is, the whole thing is gonna be really quite expensive, at least to me.. between the flight, the ticket to the show itself (yeah I know NOFX have quite a high amount they ask for, I am aware) and other small expenses.

So I'm wondering, does anybody have ideas of places to sleep for one or two nights that are cheap, and safe?
I'm talking anything, from guesthouses and small hotels to (clean) squatts or even people's roofs or whatever (hence my adding "safe" to the whole thing). Or even a nice hotel.

so there.. that's my main concern. Another one is how easy it is to find vegetarian food, but I'm not too worried about that.

And my last one would be, where is a good place to buy electronics? (and in perticular the iRiver H340 which has a much cheaper price tag in HK than elsewhere.. but yeah, this is getting a little to precise a question.. lol)

oh and last question, I'm almost certainly coming through airasia, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a cheaper way?

Also, it seems some people here have some experience in the organisation of shows.. I can only try to imagine how hard it is to get a real music scene in HK. I am from Paris, and we put on shows with my friends, and it already is quite hard to have a consistent scene...

ok, well thanks to anyone who could anwser these questions!

cheers!

axel

For cheap places, check with lonely planet or their Thorn Tree website. I stayed at Mirador Mansions a couple of years ago. It's in Kowloon. They used to have budget options, but check the room first. Hotels within a giant building. Also a couple of youth hostels in town.

Veggie food can be found, though not a popular option. Check the veggie thread from a couple of days ago.

Mong Kok is a good bet for the mp3 playa. Check the warren of shops in the Computer Center on Nelson and Fa Yuen Street. Go upstairs.

Check King Ly Chee's site for info on shows. That and undergroundhk.com. Big show coming up is the Rockit Festival. You might check their site as well.

Have a great time in Hong Kong...

Wow! Axel! I'd love to meet you!! Anyone who puts on live music shows would certainly have great advice!! There's an Underground on 10 November if you are coming a few days before the noFX show or I'll see you at the show!

pssst... There's an Underground at Venue tonight - 8:30pm start:

hey Chris! I'd love to meet anyone in HK in fact..
I'm only flying into macau on the 12th.. booked my ticket a little late, and as I wanted to avoid paying extra, I'm coming on the saturday rather than the friday as I first tought.
I'll be leaving on the monday 14th in the evening.

I also did check the Rockit Fest.. not too much of my thing, even though I almost saw Feeder once and it looked pretty good.

but yeah, on sunday, if there's anything on at Underground (or even if there isn't), it would be cool to meet and chat or whatever.

as for sleeping, I checked sites and the Thorn Tree (thanks Punk for all the answers!) and it seems that the cheapest for one person is around 24 us$ or so.. Or maybe I read it wrong.. I'll see more about that soon.

does anyone know how big the venue is?

cheers!

that's probably about right for hotel, hk is not cheap. there used to be a youth hostel in causeway bay called nobel hostel 2576 6148 another called wang fat hostel 2895 1015. in lonely planet a couple years ago.

never heard of the venue before. looks like some clever promoter unearthed a rarity as hk is seriously lacking in places to play. I'm guessing 500 capacity.

do you book shows in bkk?
