Booking an English speaking tour to Beijing

Hi

A friend of mine is travelling from the UK to stay in HK for three weeks and wants to take a short tour to Beijing. I need to do some background researches for her on what options would be available.

My friend is in her 50's so would perfer a packaged tour with English guide. I know the China Travel Services do tours like this : http://www.chinatravel1.com/english/...selections.htm

I called them but they do not give very much details and seem to promise the world when I asked about my friend's concerns that she needed a short rest after walking for 10 - 15 minutes and how strenuous the Great Wall was etc.

I wonder if there is any alternative tour operators for English speaking tourists setting off from Hong Kong please?

Cheers.

She'd probably be better off getting the Hotel to organise an English speaking guide for her. Many of these guides have their own car / transport and can cater to special needs.

If you book a tour and she ends up being put in the same batch as 30 high school kids, I have a feeling they're not going to be too sympathetic towards someone who needs a short rest every 15 minutes.

I'd book a flight / hotel package and then get the hotel to arrange the local tours.

Both the great wall and forbidden city (and most other exotic attractions will require a fair amount of walking)

I have been to the Great Wall and Forbidden City and we booked a flight and hotel package. All the hotels do local tours but we just went to these places on our own. This way you can spend as much time as you want and take your own time etc etc. It wasn't massively difficult to organise. Remember to take a hotel name card with you so that you can hand it to the taxi driver and make sure that the taxi's meter is going.
Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks folks for the advice.

I don't think she is the sort of adverturous seasoned traveller but rather like to have the comfort of knowing exactly what she is letting herself into before setting foot to the airport. That's why a packaged tour would be ideal.

I am not too sure that the resting is going to be a liability although it needs to be accommondated. She said she managed well in a packaged tour in Isreal/Jerusalem recently because there were so many things to see and the guide would usher them around quickly from one place to another but stopping for the explanation/talk etc. So I guess she does not need sitting down but perhaps just standing for a moment to recover.

Somehow I don't think she will feel ease to just book a flight to Beijing then join a hotel tour but I can mention this to her.

Thanks a lot again.

Most of the organised tours to the Great Wall go to Badaling or Mutianyu - both which have cable cars to the Wall and back so this shouldnt be a problem. The Forbidden City is flat so she should be fine.

quality Beijing tour guide

Dear Friend,
I am a quality Beijing tour guide with National Tour Guide Certificate. I could serve for your friend's stay in Beijing economically and safely as a tour guide and have rich experiences in it. I had a Master study in the US for two years, and am good at English speaking. As a Beijing habitant, I know Beijing well. The service fee is negotiable and reasonable, mainly depending on your requirement. My main purpose is to know and talk with foreign guests coming from various cultural backgrounds. Please tell me your itinerary and your idea. if you need car serive, I could drive a car for your friend. Look forward to meeting you in Beijing.
Be free to contact me: yiranzhou2002@yahoo.com
Sincerely,
Yiran

I actually did a packaged tour with CITS (It is the same thing as CTS but I booked it in America and not from here) in August.

I did one of the longer tours (13 days), but we spent 4 days in Beijing with their local guides.

I don't think that the stopping thing is going to be a problem. We stopped about every 15 or 20 minutes when we went through the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace and such so that our guide could tell us the history. And most of the time, after all of the information was given, we got about 10-15 minutes to go explore and take pictures. So if she wanted to just sit and relax while that time was going on, it would be no problem.

We went to Badaling when we did the Great Wall, and walked the "hard" side of the wall. It took about 2 hours to get up there and another hour to get down because we stopped to take so many pictures and to rest. There is another side of the wall, the "easy" part, but I didn't go up there so I can't tell you much about it except that it is supposed to be easier to climb. There is a cable car that will take you up and down if she would prefer to go that way.

Also, I think that the CTS tours usually tend to have older people on them. I am 20 and was the youngest person on our tour. The next youngest person was in her mid 30s. In Beijing, there were 75 of us all together ( 3 seperate tour guides) and most of the people were in their mid 50s to late 60s. I think that this is mostly because the younger kids usually want to do things on their own and not be tied down to a scheduled tour. I fel that way, but I did a packaged tour because my mother made me She wouldn't let me go to mainland China and just roam all over the continent by myself - something about being in a Communist Country and me not speaking Chinese...and considering she was paying for it, who was I to argue?

anyways...I think that CTS is going to be a pretty safe choice for your friend. She could always do a private tour - they are a little more expensive and if she is traveling alone, it would probably be pretty lonely, but that is her choice. One other thing to note, CTS is probably going to be one of the cheapest options if that is a concern. I went to 4 different travel agencies before I decided to go with CTS - part of it was because they were leaving when I wanted to, and part of it was becaue they were about $300 cheaper on pretty much the same tour than their competitors.

If your friend does happen to take a tour with CTS, see if she can get Emily as her tour guide. She was mine and out of the 4 tour guides that I had on the trip, was my favorite. The others who were on my tour also said that Snow was a good tour guide.

Good luck with your search,
c

.

My wife, a Cantonese & Mandarin speaker & I - preferring English as a medium of conversation requested tours from C I TS - Note the "I" for "International" - as I understand it - different to CTS.

We also requested an English speaking **LADY** guide as they have proved MUCH more amenable to our requests than MEN.

On our trip to the Great Wall, we went up the Cable Car - so much easier - and came back down the Wall to the more usual entrance / exit & had the car meet us there - arranged by the tour guide via her mobile.

Why did we exit at a lower level?

The wind got up and the cableway was shut down for safety reasons.

Interestingly, up the top was a "Pay as you go" toilet complex - and above the men's urinals was the sign :=

"No Shitting" !!!!

God help you if you needed to - there was NO WC or even an Earth Closet in sight !

Having done several CITS Personalized tours - just my wife & I and the tour guide + driver in a comfortable car; we certainly are not going to be forced to travel with a big group on a coach & conform to their requirements.

Of course, personalized tours *do* co$t more, but it's far less frustrating than being urged to board the coach when one wants to stay a bit longer.

These are our experiences with CITS tours to Kweilin & Yangshou; Kunming & Lijiang; and in and around Peking.
