Hi people, I was studying Japanese previously part time and I really want to continue studying Japanese in Hongkong part-time. Hopefully qualify for JLPT 2 at the end of the year. I was wondering is there any Japanese school available that teaches in English or mandarin (also limited). My Cantonese sucks. Realised this is the wrong place to learn japanese, no choice... work brought me here. Thanks!

I have found that privately this can cost HKD200 per hour for one-to-one English-based Japanese tutoring. I don't know if this is good or expensive. SPACE offer courses and have expatriate teachers but they can't guarantee whether a particular course will have these English-speaking teachers until enrolment time.

Learn on your own. I never really learned Japanese before. I only visited Japan three times for periods anywhere from two weeks to a month. I'm not still not considered conversational but I know enough to get myself around in Japan when it comes to ordering food, asking questions and making basic conversation. I can also read hiragana, katagana and some kanji without ever formally learning them. I think being in the right environment helps a lot. I also know other expats who stayed in Japan for short periods and they're pretty proficient in Japanese. I think from my hands-on learning, I already exceeded many people who took the introductory class in high school - many of these people can't even retain or get anything out of these kind of courses. I don't think Japanese is a difficult language to learn on your own. I recommend getting Japanese for Busy People volumes II and III. It's for people who have some understanding of Japanese and looking to advance in comprenhension and speaking. I'm currently studying off Japanese for Busy people volume II. It's not a bad book. I think if you're motivated enough, you won't need classes. Good luck! Last edited by Aritaurus; 24-10-2006 at 11:01 PM.
