louise, i'm a hot headed idiot most of the time. if i go there personally it'll end in blows and at least somebody in the hospital. if there's one thing i really detest, it's "people" who have no consideration of others. far as i'm concerned, this specific ilk has no right to live among us (or live at all...).
haven't talked to mgt yet, but golfduke's story is enlightening. that ain't no sweet old lady, she's a monster. go to a freaking recording studio to do your voice training for crissake. or a hill somewhere no one else has to hear it. however, it's good to know mgt does get involved. indeed, talked to a person living at one of the fanciest places in HK (on the way to the peak), and there if a tenant's too loud they have the right to deny them residency privileges (ie kick their sorry asses out).

but what's going on with those Spaniards?

Stupidity is universal and the Chinese don't seem to have any concept of common courtesy for others around them.

I would like to push for a bylaw that has the horns removed from all the taxi's since they abuse them so much.

honking here is about as noxious as in any major city. try living in the mainland dude, it's much worse most parts. you're somewhat right, people here have less consideration for their fellow humans, but it's not coz they're "chinese". the sense of other developed in the west by way of centuries of strife, hatred, war and later renaissance (spl?) hasn't taken root here as much, which is a shame.

or as an alternative, you can try using the Bose Quiet Comfort 2 headphones at night when you are in bed together with a reasonable pile of blankets over the headphones

It might sound silly to the point of ridiculous, but it has worked out rather nicely to me so far. there are never ending construction works near where I live (my house is adjacent to the castle peak road where it's having a major overhaul) and with the headphones a and pile of blankets (that's because the headphones alone can't cancel out all the noises) I am finally having some quality sleep at night

by the way the those headphones are quite pricey, but definitely worth it!

Nobody's said anything about getting a blank cd, recording the sound of silence onto it, then cranking it up on the stereo to overpower any other noise in the vicinity.

Works for me

ah yes, I failed to mention. I crank up the air conditioner all the time to the lowest temp possible.
so headphones + pile of blankets + room of freezing air = comfy sleep

it even cancels out the noise generated from the air con, but you do get to hear some sort of "hiss" sound from the headphones (but it's very subtle)

okay it sounds idiotic and ludicrous

first, I don't work for Bose, and it's not cheap, the headphones I mean (I am still a student) but I did buy it in an effort to live in a more comfortable environment (I am very sensitive to noises around me)

I sleep with my headset with a pile of blankets. okay not a pile exactly, just one or two. remember I am just using the blankets to cover the headphones and not around my face and any other spots. you can use other insulating materials (I just happened to have quite a number of blankets in my house

the headphones are very good in my humble opinion, I browsed throught the forum at www.thetravelinsider.info before I went out and bought it.

I think I bought it for around, like, $2500 to $2800, which is definitely quite steep. but if you can't rectify the situation that you are in right now (like I can't tell the construction workers to stop humming and banging on the concrete) I suggest you get hold of one of these headphones, not necessarily from Bose. (I heard that Planet Quiet is quite good as well)

That's my 2 cents

venice i know how you feel and you have my support: noise-sensitive people unite! it's our unalienable right to live in a quiet environment. however, i'd love to see you with towels around your headphones. must be a sight for sore eyes. have you tried regular ear plugs? they work for me, and as a few people here noted, help produce some of the funkiest, most creative dreams.
