Just did mine about 2mths ago. Nope they will NOT keep your passport.

They will issue you with a temporary HK ID certificate on the day which is valid for about 30days.

You go back in 1 week and collect your HK ID card.

Pretty straight forward.

Glöm bara inte att ta med dej det temporära ID kortet (pappers biten) när du hämtar upp ditt nya ID kort, annars måste du ansöka igen.. fast jag tror det står på pappret också.
Iaf ha de gott.. kul att se en annan svenne här..fast om jag inte tar helt fel tror jag att du har pratat med min fru på nätet tidigare.
