Post job-interview etiquette

Last month, I had two job interviews at a company that I felt went reasonably well. The decision maker said he would not have time to pursue this further until he returns from summer holidays in late-August and would contact me then.

I happen to know that he returned to work as of Monday, but I have not heard a thing.

The uncertainty is causing me some anguish because i am slated to begin work on a nightmare project at my present job that will require constant travel. If I were to give notice, I'd probably be reassigned and might even be able to take a nice holiday. If I give notice while this project is underway, I'll probably leave on worse terms than need be.

Should I take the fact that I haven't been contacted by this potential employer as a bad sign? Would it be pushy to initiate contact before "late August" has passed?

It won't do any harm at this stage to get in contact with them. Drop them a line, say how much you enjoyed the previous meetings, and say how keen you are about the position. Ask them what the next step is.

What's the worst that can happen?

I'd say call. "Hi .. just wanted to check if you were back from your holiday ... had a good time .... any progress on the job you were looking at filling... "
