Urgent Salary Advise required

Hi,
I have just been asked by a company what salary I expect and I have no idea what to ask for, I don't want to ask for too much and price myself out of the job.
I have 3 and a half years IT experience, previous employers include blue-chip company and investment bank. Not specialised in anyone area of IT have more general experience. Position I have applied for is with a consulting company, who would then place me in an investment bank. Have a degree in IT.
Can anyone give me a ball park figure was to what I could expect??
Thanks

You need to do some googling.

Your best bet is the term "salary survey' or something like that. I think Dice.com has a good one for IT people. Some even have "localizers" that will adjust it up or down for the specific city.

Hi, I'm a Graphic Designer but this may be useful:

Yes, also roughly work it out from what you were earning before/what you want now, taking into consideration differences with tax etc (see my thread on Good Interview Questions).

I have had feedback from companies that don't have work available but have been kind enough to have helped with answering these sorts of things.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a consistent "rate for the job" in Hong Kong as there would be in other places. You find people on wildly different salaries doing basically the same thing.

From your limited description I couldn't be more precise than to say that it probably sits in the range HK$10K-HK$35K per month, which isn't much help I guess.

It really is all about what you can get away with and what the company thinks you're worth. Don't undersell yourself - if they accept your first suggestion then you've gone too low - they can always counter with a lower offer, but they aren't going to counter with a higher one.
