The importance of learning Cantonese...

Surely it's a good thing to learn the local lingo at least a little, and that's what I plan to do.
So what I really want to know is where can I find local girls to try it out? Which bars do they hang out. The places i've been to are full of expats. Do I need to go to Kowloon?
Thanks for any help.

It might be better to learn some basics first.
Once you have some Cantonese you can use it to impress the natives.

If you really want to meet typical local girls I think you need to move away from TST and Central.

U will need pretty good cantonese to try out with a local girl. Most typical locals dont or too afraid to speak english!

Yep. Unless they're exposed to a westerners / work with westerners, there is too much loss of face involved.

Having said that, plenty of locals speak decent English. Tons are well educated, overseas educated and have lived in multiple countries.

You'd probably better of finding someone who can communicate with you in reasonable english, before you attempt the "can we practice cantonese over dinner" routine.

You can try bars where there are a higher contingent of bilingual girls like JJ's or Manhattan.

Different experience here.

While I was learning Cantonese I found Chinese people in general very friendly and curious, especially the girls, :-) and learnt a lot from trying to chat to people in very bad Chinese. Most people were more than willing to help me.

Please note that my Cantonese is not fluent and I still blunder many times.

I think the real problem is local girls seldom hang out at bars. Try Chinese restaurants. And one more problem is local girls might not talk to strangers, no matter in English or Chinese. Well, I should say that's only because of different culture.

Is the real meaning of this post totally obscured to all but me? Or am I looking too deep? I think me and allnighter are both on the same page. Maybe we're too cynical.
