| | | Mobile phones which work in HK, Japan and US Any suggestions on phones which work in HK( and most Europe), Japan and US, same instrument and what are best choices?
I had a pleasant surprise recently when I saw that my 3G phone worked in Japan thru Vodafone JP - which wasnt the case before. I always had to get a new mobile phone (rented) when in Japan.
Curious to ascertain what people's thoughts are for the best option for phones/services which will enable me to have the same number irrespective of where Im travelling.

Possibly, UK phone system may be mostly GSM, therefore signle band GSM phone may work in UK.
Different story is the backword country, USA. There they have the most incompatible system and you'd need tri-band or quad-band phone.
Another issue is SIM card. Once in US or UK, you'd have to find a mobile phone operator who supports SIM cards. This should be no problem in UK, but much bigger problem in the US.
I once lived in the US and decided to boycott the US mobile operators. I had a tri-band phone subscribed to overseas provider and used roaming instead. It was rather expensive, but gave me far more service options than what is available to US subscribers.

| | | Anyway, if your reason is to have 1 phone that works everywhere you travel, then you make sure you buy tri-band or quad-band. It doesn't matter if you have 3G or not. | |

| | | The US has a few different standards, but GSM is used by some of the largest providers (Cingular, T-Mobile, and I thought Sprint). Verizon, the largest, uses CDMA, but not the sim-card version that you find in HK. Not sure if it works.
Japan is really the odd one out. No idea there.
As always, I recommend buying a pay as you go sim if you are just traveling overseas, flipping sims in and out as you go.
And there is always Skype, if you made the transition beyond mobile phones. | | Tools | Search | | | | | Rate This Thread | | | All times are GMT +8. The time now is 02:43 PM. | Partners |
