No HKID...need Cell Phone

I did some research and found out that I would have to make a considerable deposit (USD500) to get post-paid phone service because I do not have a HK ID card. Therefore, I am stuck with pre-paid.

Has anyone gone through this and has a better idea. I need a phone for about a year (actually, i only need the sim card) and I will mostly be making local and US calls.

Thanks!

I don't have a HKID either and I just went into SmarTone Vodafone in Central (Theatre Lane) and bought a sim for my phone (UK phone). I think it was HK$150. It's sort of prepaid package - as long as you keep a minimum of $50 or $60 the account stays active. Local and UK (so prob US too) calls are pretty cheap.

I got a post-paid SIM from Peoples using my UK passport as ID after paying a HK$1000 (about US$130) deposit - it's still significant, but a lot less than US$500.

Is there a particular reason why you want a post-paid SIM? If it's just for voice calls, the rates around here for pre-paid usage are much much much lower than in the UK, so it's less of a big deal getting a post-paid service - in fact, I pay less to call both UK landlines and UK mobiles from my pre-paid HK SIM in HK (I've got two phones, two SIMs...) than I would to call either a UK landline or a UK mobile in the UK from a UK pre-paid SIM. If that makes sense...

For me, I got the post-paid SIM so I could sign up for Peoples' unlimited data plan, which is rather nice with a Treo

Cheers
Richard

My husband and I were able to sign up with CSL 1010 no problem. We went to a few other places who said we needed HKID but CSL did it with just a US passport.

cerberus is an unknown quantity at this point.
just get a vodafone/smartone PayGO pre-paid deal. it's cheap. one month cost me around 100-150, it's .15 a minute for local, .50 for mainland and i think most idd calls are like 2-5 a minute, which isn't too bad in a pinch.
